To say we are family is not quite right but I know your father and i respect him greatly. Michelle is my cousin and someone that I consider to be a friend as well as relation. I can not say I know how you feel because i am not you nor have I been in a minority situation as you are. I though am completly appaled by the actions of some of your classmates… This kind of mistreatment should not be tolerated in ANY venue let alone a public high school. There should be action taken against these students… I offer my support to you in any way I can give it.

First off, you are pretty pathetic ‘larz’. You lied too your teacher to get out of class to go tell daddy that some kids at your school were wearing unethical hoods.

Now we also find out you are a troublemaker at school.

I have friends that are black, but they don’t act like “n’s”. There is a difference between a black person and the “n”. “n” go around acting like the are owed something from society because of history. “n” go around dealing drugs and calling each other “n’s”. “n’s” hit on anything with a vagina and are very tasteless in the way they do it.

Everyone is racist to a certain point. Black people are racist against white people just as much as white people are against blacks.

Let’s see….. I work fine with people that are black but I would never let my child breed with a black guy. Why, because I want my heritage pure. Similiar to italians, why would I want a mixing pot in my blood lines.

This country was founded on freedom of opinion and choices. You whiny people are what’s wrong with this country. From females for equal rights to blacks. Look at the females of this country. I hope your proud of burning your bra’s so that your future generation’s of females can become more sluttier than ever before.

Be happy with how far we have come in this country and the opportunities you have been afford despite your intelligence leves.

Your father is going to write a book about his life. Please tell your father that we have already read many books about how black people have been treated and we really don’t need anymore. I think having a black president show’s you that we have come a long way and there are still many that will never like you because of your need for entitlement.

Do you see white people writing books about how ridiculous black people act? I hope there is a book out there like that. What is up with black people having to be so loud and inconsiderate of everyone around them? What is up with it’s okay for you to use the ‘n’ word but a white person uses it and then you get on ignorance wagon.

You have white people trying to act as ignorant as you do as well. Come on, pant’s hanging down below your underwear. That’s real pride, right!

Maybe if you did not act worse than “white trailer trash” we might have come alot further.

Otherwise, your a whiny immature daddy’s boy. You should be expelled for lying to your teacher. Were you in grave danger? No. Could you have waited until you got home? Yes.

You are an attention seeker, like most black people. Move back to where you came from.

I don’t really know any of you, nor do I attend Alta HS. What I do know is this- racism is never a joke, never funny, and never something that is “no big deal.” I grew up in the south, and now work and go to school in Utah Valley. I was amazed upon moving here to find that the great strides toward equality that the communities in the southern states have taken have all but been ignored here. Anyone taking a stand against racism (regardless of personal failings) should be commended, not slandered by the anonymous internet masses. Racism is not dead. It is a big deal. Thousands of people are murdered every year in the US because of hate. Thousands more are beaten, raped, stolen from, and crippled for the same terrible reasons. The KKK lynched (killed, mutilated, and hung by the neck from a tree for those of you who seem not to understand what that means) thousands upon thousands of people solely because of their political affiliation and skin color. Joking about something that terrible is only one step away from actually doing it. It’s atrocious, and disgusting to me that people defend someone who is willing to make light of such a terrible chapter in the history of our country.

First of all, to all of you that think Lars is some “hypocritical bitch” or “trouble maker”, you are proving his point and showing that you are, frankly, retarded. You are in high school kids, stop acting like children and realize where he is coming from. I went to Alta, yeah a lot goes on there that many people don’t know about; if anything would have happened that was racist like that, no one would have put up with crap like that. Yeah, everyone tells racist jokes and everyone laughs. But this whole incident was too far. There is a line for everything and this crossed it. Stop letting your retarded self take over and try to defend the idiots that pulled this prank, because it does you no good nor them. They were stupid and they will realize it. High School is all about being the “popular funny kid” when in all reality, those kids grow up to be the biggest losers of them all. It takes guts to stand up for what is right and Lars should be commended for it. He lives so close that I can see him every day and I get to talk to him. He is one of the nicest guys I have met, especially for being a junior in high school. So go ahead and try to bring him down or attack him with your words, but just realize that you are pointing out your own ignorance and stupidity. Believe it or not kids (or those of you that are acting like kids), life actually is more than high school popularity. NO ONE CARES ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL 2 YEARS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL. And you parents/people old enough to know better, shame on you for verbally attacking and poking fun at this event and at Lars. You are the reason that I cringe at stupid people. Ignorance is bliss in most cases, except for when you look like an idiot making fun of a young man standing up for what is right. I got your back Lars!

        genevieve,

I doubt you have any black friends with outlooks that you posses. At least “real” friends.

Maybe you should reflect or research a little bit on the history of blacks in this country, completely abused and destroyed as objects, and these conditions lasted hundreds of years.

We do owe them something, and every time I see a picture of lynch mobs cheering, KILLING people, without any recourse to their actions I understand that fact.

Your limited intelligence is demonstrated throughout your post, and I’m sure your parents now, or your upbringing previously is what brings your flawed ideas to our society.

Thank goodness people with your limited ability will ever achieve much, although I’m sure your “daddy” will take care of you. All of you self indulgent rich kids need to be adjusted to the world.

        Your statement:
“This country was founded on freedom of opinion and choices. You whiny people are what’s wrong with this country. From females for equal rights to blacks. Look at the females of this country. I hope your proud of burning your bra’s so that your future generation’s of females can become more sluttier than ever before. ”

When was freedom of opinion ever stifling to a race? Glorifying a murderous group of people reflects a misguided state of mind, not “freedom of opinion”. Sure people have the right to make their own choices, but to also live with those consequences, and perhaps the boy that decided it would be a great gag to joke about the horrible things that still take place in this country has learned a lesson.

In any case, maybe one day you’ll truly understand what it means to be a human, not white, brown, or black, just a person that lives on this planet and works towards making it a better place for our children and their offspring.

Whether or not the KKK clothing was aimed at Larz, I applaud him for bringing it to the attention of the news. We don’t talk about race enough. Racial slurs have no place at school where all should feel safe. He is brave.

        Wow Genevieve,
You seem like such classy person. I am happy that we don’t have too many tornados around here because I am sure you mobile home would surely get blown away.
You are such a stupid redneck.
When people read your post they laugh knowing that some day your daugther is going to bring a really nice black guy home and they are going to tell you they are in love and getting married, oh and they are having twins. So much for keeping your white power bloodline clean.

Blogs Like this shows just how strong racism still is especially here in Utah you have this trailer trash talking like a true bigot trying to reverse this on this student like he is the one at fault. But nevertheless you are always going to have trailer trash around and y in the world do white people love to tell black people go back to where they came from go back and take history white people came to America on ships so you go back to where you came from.

This act joke or no joke was horrible to read about. Secondly, I understand that Alta and 90% of that area are populated with white children, but how did that kid get out of the gym or back into the hallways without being beat up, jumped, or at least punched by someone of color. He should have been crushed.

That part amazes me. I didn’t attend high school in Utah, but with no immediate suspension (for the participating students) shows how far off that area is in regards to racial relations. How does that happen? How is it that there was not an immediate response to this kids actions right when he entered the gym? This will be interesting to watch the aftermath and all of us will find out how that school district handles racism.

        To MB and genevieve:

What the HELL is wrong with you two? It is people like you that give places like Utah a bad name to the rest of the country. You want your heritage “pure”? Narrow-minded crap like that will find you incredibly isolated and sadly ignorant.

And MB: “it was a stupid idea and racial stuff isn’t to be messed with but you don’t have to bring it to the news” ?? Apparently it does need to be brought to the news; especially if school personnel are blatantly ignoring the problem.

Larz: you keep going with your bad self, you and your dad. I’m a white middle class 29 year old woman with a little half brother who is half black…it’s people like you who will make life a little easier for the next generation. I am so sorry that there are people who can’t see outside their privileged, white little boxes.

I am reading these coments made my the ignorance of youth Genevieve & MB… that have no idea what they are talking about. You say go back where you came from…let me ask you this, were are your ancestors from? Not here garenteed!! Lets see how “pure” your blood is… Maybe you need to go back to ur homeland…If you did something like this at work as a joke do you not think you would get fired…there are reasons this kinda behavior is unacceptable, would this be ok if you saw this kinda incident at a UTAH JAZZ or U of U game?

As Jordan put it everytime I see pictures of the way the slaves were treated & lynched make my stomach turn & I am white. It is a reminder of how far we have come in our country.

I’ll give you both that you wanted to act intellegent & all growed up but U FAILD!!! If anyone has demonstrate “ignorence” u both suceeded w/honors!!!

As for you Larz way to hold your head up high & stand for what you believe in. Your father obviously has been the only parent to show he child the right path.

I am a white mother of 3 & if they even tried to concider something like this I would be horrified & embarrassed of their behavior no making excuses for them. It is not a joke or even funny.

    • My kids did not go to Alta,I am not bi-racial, I am not black, african American etc. But I am a Sandy resident. Blown out of porportion or Not..It happened and it was wrong. To say that the kid -Mackay did not understand or realize that wearing a pillow case over one’s head is offensive and wrong is ridculous. (how old is he?) He did it because he thought he could get away with it. (he is probably LDS and caucasion So, that makes him part of the majority not the minority) he may not of gone in thinking that it would be such a big deal, but that was his mistake and I think he and his family should man up and deal with th consequences. My gosh, you just can’t wear something like that and not expect a BAD outcome. You can not wear a white pillow case, just like you can’t wear a Swastika and chant white power. It’s Hateful,it’s offensive and it’s wrong. BOTH a white hood and a Swastika are well known symbols of hate and are well known in history. To say that he didn’t understand is pathetic. For the mother to say that the principal sat there and told her, I know your family, I know Mackay, But I have to do this anyway.. Is all the more reason for the principal to be put on leave. I find this whole thing appalling and the more the parents will try and prove their son right, the worst it seems. In a perfect world..yes.. two men, two boys, two religions would say: hey that offended me..and the other say..oh.. I am so sorry..but we don’t live in a perfect world and I don’t think the mother of Mackay should expect Larz, to go to her son wearing a WHITE HOOD and say.. oh you offended me. Chances are, her son wouldn’t say he was sorry.( is that kids mother that naive or stupid to think none of this would have happened IF only LARZ had gone to her WHITE hooded son and explained his emotions and explained history to him.) Now I know where the kid gets his brains…Anyone who wears a white pillow case synonymous with the KKK, doesn’t care if it’s offensive. None of the other studends wore a white hood over their head. And do you know why? it is because it’s wrong and offensive. It’s like robbing a bank and saying, I didn’t realize it was a federal offense. “I just did it for fun” “But I am sorry now that I am caught.I shouldn’t be punished because I made a mistake”. Did the mother of Mackay really have to explain to her teenage son why wearing a white hood is wrong? Are you serious? Did the kid never take history? THEY (the parents) literally had to EXPLAIN why wearing a white hood is wrong? Come on. Do they have to sit down and explain why Hitler is not the most beloved man in history too? Did they really have to sit down with him and EXPLAIN that to him? Seriously? If that is the case, I believe the Canyon School district needs to add history in their cirriculum, because it’s obvious history is not being taught there. I read, and not sure if that is true, that “white Power” and “black Power’ was being chanted during the assembly. Oh my.. I hope not, and again, if that is the case, then the principal and vice principal should be fired. I understand the “school color thing” but I looked on the cayon school district website and the official school colors of Alta are Red and Black. Not black and white. And couldn’t they have Chanted: SENIORS…JUNIORS… that’s what other schools do.I would have thought the principal would have been smart enough to catch that. And wearing a white hood while chanting WHITE POWER… WOW.. that kid McKAY is seriously stupid. LIKE VERY STUPID. LIKE DUMB STUPID…LIKE IDIOT STUPID.. like WTF STUPID. IF… he actually chanted white power while wearing a white hood. (just typing it creeps me out)
If Mackays parents find his white pillow case so harmless and blown out of portion, then I suggest, they allow their son to wear it down the street in NYC, LA… or… just let him go hang out at WEST HIGH SCHOOL and let him proudly CHANT up his school pride wearing a white pillow case. Will that be blown out of portion?
The fact is…WRONG IS WRONG. It was wrong, incorrect, appalling, disgusting. Not innocent, not a mistake, not bad judgement. Whether Mackay meant it as a racial thing or Not..There is only ONE way to take a White hood.. especially if he is chanting white power… BY THE WAY BLOGGERS… LARZ & his family is not making UTAH look bad, Mackay and his family are!! Just by saying it’s blown out of portion and saying their son didn’t understand. BY not being appalled and owning up to it. The more that family tries to talk themselves out of it, the worse they will look. Larz is not making ALTA look bad… Mckay and his family are.. THE BLOGGERS with some of their stupid, riduculous comments are. The more they try to convince everyone it was harmless the worse it seems and the more media attention this will get.
HELLO- do you not think that the media is going to get a hold of this blog and print the racial slurs and the comments? But maybe that’s what McKays family wants… Maybe they hope they can get on good morning america and bring their son wearing a white pillow case over his head to prove how innocent and how blown out of portion this is… OR better yet.. MAYBE the WHITE HOODED Mckay and his family can be a guest on OPERA, and since they are very good people according to the prinicpal, they can show OPRAH and the rest of the world how ridiculous and innocent this whole thing is…They have embarrassed your school, embarrassed Utah and put us once again in the national limelight of being State full of idiots.
I support Larz and his family and wish them luck..It’s a tough road, standing up when you are the minority and it’s probably going to get worse. GOOD LUCK!

    dear cousin,
what happened at your school is very much intolerable, and although it may not seem like a lot coming from me, i think it is amazing and frankly commendable that you would voice your frustration in a healthy and effective way. Even the littlest things – things such as this – help to fix what may be unethical. And every voice should be heard when its standing up for good.
I’m sorry about what happened. But thank you for standing up for yourself. it shows a lot of courage.

Grow up, clearly you are one of the immature people that have no life experience. Are you really that sheltered? Perhaps if you have the motivation and/or ability to continue your education you will learn that targeting someone because of their race or beliefs is unethical. One day you will have children and look back at how you reacted to this situation and see how truely wrong it is to call someone a fag or support someone that wears something representing hate of a certain race. I hope you learn this before you have kids that way you can teach them this behavior is not ok. Being 27 all I can do is tell myself you are just an immature kid trying to fit in with what you consider the “in crowd”. If you were around adults talking about this and showing support you would be broke right down. You are disgusting

It’s hard to give an ounce of credibility to a person that doesn’t have a clue what the difference between “write” (right) and wrong might be. Ashley, perhaps your taking a bit more time to deal with things in High School will help you appear a bit more educated. Reading, WRITING and SPELLING will help you to look less like a jack-ass. Hold off on the math for now. Lashing out in this manner likely tells readers your true story. How’s fifth grade?

      • Posted by LC on March 22, 2011 at 12:39 am

Ashley I can tell how you were raised by your post, I hope your parents are proud of the racist baby girl they raised. You ask Larz if he is in fifth grade while using profanity, is that to make you feel grown up. All the African American kids were laughing let me guess you went and ask each and everyone if they were laughing because they thought it was funny, or they did not know what else to do because they didn’t want you and your friends to think they were a bunch of fags. If your views are the views of most the kids at Alta High School the school district needs to do some serious investigation. Oh and before you say you are not racist in your post you slammed someone by accusing them of being gay/fag, and you think that someone mocking what African Americans, Jews and Gays have been through is a joke I feel sorry for you and your close minded friends.
Larz I hope you understand that people are taught to be racist it just shows that there is still ignorance in the world, and that some adults still are to stupid to understand not to teach their children hate. I think you speaking out about is a great start…Don’t let people like Ashley stop you from teaching tolerance..

Alta High School needs to seriously step up on their English and graduation requirements. So classy to drop the f bomb too. How about the idiot Mckay who thought it was so funny to dress up in kkk and did the Nazi salute actually acknowledge his actions and be a man and the rest of you stop making excuses for him.

Mckay, I wish you had made a better judgement before putting on that hat. I thought when you moved on from middle school you would grow up to be a smart, nice young man, but I guess I was wrong. I tried to talk some sense into you.
Larz, I met you once when you came to our house with my daughter. You are a very intelligent young man. I have seen a bit of the video of it. I support you in standing up and speaking out. Stay strong.

Like most have already posted above go Larz, I graduated from Alta and it was the same way when I was in school there. The joke is not that the kid was wearing something so offensive and ethically wrong but that students like you Ashley would support him. It truly shows the ignorance and stupidity that still exists today. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that this student can get away with this. I was raised in Phoenix, Arizona and was raised in a school as a minority being white and let me tell you, if this happened there you would have been expelled after being jumped by many people if not stabbed. Im glad something this issue is being raised here in Utah because not only is there a racism for anyone of a minority group but also anyone who is an outsider and that is wrong. Everyone is a human being the same in nature regardless of faith, skin tone, or sexual orientation and should be treated equal!!!!!
Oh and by the way, there is a reason the KKK has been labeled a terrorist organization and the members are pursued by law enforcement maybe since this kid is supporting them they should pursue him for being affiliated with such a group.

He did not think this was “hilarious”.
        Just to clarify.

      • Posted by Sally on March 29, 2011 at 8:18 am

Ashley, what a mouth you have! If you really want to make a point about how you feel, then do so with intelligence. Spelling and grammar really are important, and using profanity, especially the “f” word, only shows that you don’t have anything important to say, or if you do, you don’t know how to say it.

I don’t know any of the people involved in this incident, but I must applaud someone who stands up for what he truly believes in, especially in defense of people who are “different” from what their classmates and peers are. There is absolutely no place for racism in our society, but it is there anyway.

      • Posted by fairygrl on March 29, 2011 at 3:22 pm

My daughter went to Alta and this sort of stuff was still quite prevalent at that time. It’s sad to see that no one has really learned from situations like Egypt, Khadafi, and the like, not to mention Hitler spawn of hatred and genocide.
I am also disheartened by the fact that “Ashley”, while trying to bluster at full speed, still cannot spell, be grammatically correct or speak eloquently without using expletives. Shame on you, shame on your parents.

        Larz,
I don’t know you, but I have to say simply that you did the right thing. I am embarrassed for the ignorant people who do not understand the seriousness of their racist actions. Fortunately, I think most people in Utah are appalled by their actions. America needs to move forward with enlightenment, not step backwards into our darkest moments. You did the right thing, and I applaud you. Never give up.

        Ashley, Ashley, Ashley,

I hope you have learned a valuable lesson – to watch your actions and words. We hear about it almost daily – from the people who post inappropriate comments on Facebook to incidents video/audiotaped from cell phones.

It would do you, and others at Alta High, some good to read about “Sundown Towns”, the Watts Riots and “Survivors: Children of the Holocaust” It may open your eyes just a little.

There is a saying that most of us old folks can relate to: “Those who don’t learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.” Please learn from the past so no form of discrimination continues at Alta High or anywhere else.

I am deeply appalled by the behavior of these students. Although by definition of my skin, Caucasian, I am a member of the majority, I always haven’t been. I’ve been in circles of those of other descents in which sometimes, I was a minority. Words of hate were tossed around, but I was always an exception because I wasn’t “one of them. You’re different.” I offer what empathy I can and sympathy. The actions of these students are intolerable and frankly inhumane. I applaud you on your actions, courage, and efficiency in which you handled this situation. Keep it up.

Kudos to you Larz for shining a light on this intolerance. I think a mere summons to the principal’s office is certainly underwhelming for those who participated in such an act. Was this event videotaped? Perhaps, if so, the ACLU may be interested in how our educators are dealing with such intolerances in our halls of learning. We certainly want to ensure they are teaching the correct values. Sounds like there is more to this story that needs to be uncovered if it has festered to social networking and maybe even bullying. I will do my part to help spread your story throughout facebook.

I agree that it can be cut back but I firmly believe that he was not supporting the KKK. This kid did something stupid but this is not the whole school. This is a great school that I feel comfortable sending my sister to when she goes to high school. She is also African American.

I have never been on the side of a minority, but I’ve dated minorities, and I’ve felt a little bit of how the world is different from their view. I’ve had people glare, and stare when I was with any of them, I’ve heard stories of people treating them differently. It really opened my eyes to hear this, and to date them, because, I was blind before, and thought that racism was over. Just because I don’t look at people differently, doesn’t mean other people think the same way. It made me sad to think that these guys were treated the way they were, and to hear stories where people were outright rude. I completely agree with you to go public with this story, and I hope it picks up nationally, so kids don’t think this is ok behavior. I think these kids need to be disciplined, and know this is definitely not something they can do.

The act wasn’t ment to be racist…… It was aimed at the seniors because they were wearing all black and the juniors were supposed to where white.

I personally think Mac was stupid for doing this but, it doesnt mean that Larz needs to make up a bunch of lies about what happened so he can make up a story for the news. Alot of the stuff that he said happened…never did. Mac already apologized and was punished for what he did. This doesn’t mean he needs to be made an example of infront of the nation. He was made an example of in front of Alta already so let’s just keep it there. This act was not meant to be racist in anyway. It was just interpreted that way.

I just think it’s stupid that Mac is getting wailed on for something that he didn’t even mean to do. I don’t like how Larz is lying about alot of the incident either. It makes the story much worse then it actually is.

I dont think this blog accurately portrays what went on. I was there and saw everything first hand. The Junior class was told to wear white to the assembly while the seniors were to wear black. The spirit bowl is not taken lightly at Alta. The student did not bring the mask to pick on the “minority”. He simply did it to poke fun at the seniors. When Larz saw the mask, he took matters into his own hands grabbing the mask and throwing it down. Many other black kids walked by the mask and laughed because of the nature, “poking fun at seniors”. The kid then ran around the court when the Juniors beat the Seniors in a game. THERE WAS NO RACIAL SLUR intended. Larz then takes things one step farther calling his dad, who by the way called the police… Is this a way to handle things in high school. I talked to the kid after, he felt bad, but did not mean to offend larz or anyone else. Just a simple joke. This is High School. Let kids be kids.

Thank you SO much for telling the whole truth. I saw the same thing happen, and I’m sick of the situation being made to sound like some awful planned racist attack took place. It was an immature, not well thought out thing to do.

      • Posted by Nik on March 29, 2011 at 3:32 pm

I always thought that the KKK was history, but when I went to Atlanta to visit some friends I learned differently. We were driving at night and we passed a small church building, as I looked in the window I saw people in white robes and pointed hats. They were the KKK. I was shocked and made a comment to my friends that I thought the KKK was abolished and was history. Their response was..”The KKK in the south is like polygamy in Utah. It still goes on but nobody really does anything about it. It just gets ignored.” This may not be as big of a deal if it was history, but it still goes on now. It still hurts people and its illegal. Lars, I’m glad you did not ignore this. You have every right to stand up for yourself and all other black people. Where the KKK is still active, I’m sure it could cause fear among blacks and you need to put a stop to things now. Maybe the other black people at Alta just laughed because they were afraid to stand up for themselves for fear of being hurt. You did the right thing. Good luck.

    • Posted by Alicia on March 22, 2011 at 1:19 pm

I think a joke can go too far, and dressing up as a KKK member is not funny. I’m white, and I would be offended by this. I don’t think it’s ok to dress up as a part of a group that was so hateful towards other people, the KKK is not something to joke about, they hurt a lot of people, and they are not a group to dress up as.

    • Posted by shocked on March 22, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I can’t believe how ignorant you are. Can you really not see how messed up this “joke” is. It wasn’t just “poking fun” at seniors, it was “poking fun” at seniors that are dressed in all black. Therefore, making a statement that the “white” juniors are better than the “black” seniors. Can’t you see issues with this? I’m sure this kid’s decision to wear the hood was based on the fact that the seniors were dressed in “black”. If they were in pink and he did, no one would have thought it was funny. Think about it. What he did is racism and I can see how it can be offensive. I can’t believe faculty allowed this. There are other ways to be funny. I hope you and other students will learn a life lesson from this. High school is supposed to help prepare you for your future. If someone did this at a mall or in the work place, police would be called in. Just because we are in UT, doesn’t mean it’s ok. Some state’s actually have laws against wearing hoods in public. (http://www.azcentral.com/offbeat/articles/2010/11/01/20101101north-carolina-halloween-mask-arrest-law.html) Do a Google search on people getting arrested for wearing kkk hood. Maybe this will shed some light on the seriousness of the situation. If you let “kids be kids” those kids may end up in jail or dead.

While I appreciate your “first hand” insight as to what happened, it is apparent to me that things did go too far on both sides of this issue. If students at Alta, or any high school for that matter, don’t understand the racial significance of a pointed white hat like that worn by the KKK, then the school and the parents are not doing their job in ending racism.

However, what really stands out in your comment is your last statements: “Just a simple joke. This is High School. Let kids be kids. High school is exactly the time to grow up. High school is when kids should learn NOT to be kids. Adulthood doesn’t simply begin and childhood end as soon as a diploma is in the students hand. It is learned long before that.

Whether its high school students or adults; even young children, racism should be taught to be avoided and stopped. Racism, whether intended or not, is not “just a simple joke”. High school kids should know by now what racism is, and that it should not be tolerated. There is no gray area when it comes to racism. Whether is is perpetrated by students or adults, it’s wrong. There is no room for “let kids be kids” here.

First of all, this is a blog, a place where one can write their opinion. This is not a research paper where Larz has to dive into both sides of the issue, writing facts alone.

I applaud Larz for bring this to the attention of the rest of the world. Regardless of whether the whole senior class was wearing black, and the juniors were wearing white, student who wore the hood did so in bad taste.

I have to say that I am so disappointed in the education, or lack of education, that I see written in response to this blog. Kids, learn to read, spell and write correctly. After you leave highschool no one is going to correct you and explain to you how things really should have been spelled, or the difference between there, their and they’re or your and you’re – they just simply won’t hire you! I read earlier in a comment that no one cares about high school after it’s all over, and it’s true.

I urge you all to look outside of the Utah bubble, learn about what goes on in the world around you. Learn how to form friendships with people for who they are inside. Read, read, read! Use what you learn to form your own opinions! Everyone has their own opinion, but a part of growing up is learning to respect other’s opinions, even though you may not agree with them.

I can understand that sometimes high school kids don’t think things all the way through when they decide to do something. So it’s possible that ‘Mac’ feels bad about what he did and realizes the nature of the joke offended people. And I hope that he can continue to grow up and have this teach him greater respect for people.

Never should anything racial be taken as a joke. And whether or not ‘Mac’ has learned his lesson, I can see that many many more have not. Let Larz’s voice remind people everywhere and at every level of life that that this sort of ‘joke’ should never be tolerated. Hopefully this experience will teach young adults (and adults for that matter) for generations to think before doing something this harmful.

Just because other Black students were laughing doesn’t mean it makes this situation okay. Did it occur to you that it probably made them very uncomfortable and laughed it off as a coping strategy? Being a minority surrounded by many White students in a divisive setting is not usually the safest place for minorities to express their discomfort and stand up for themselves. Larz, did stand up for himself, but it is clear that Alta is not a safe place for him despite the fact that he did what was right. This is precisely the reason why other minorities may have laughed at this racist act; it protects them from lynchings such as the one can be found on this blog. Somehow, people believe that doing what is right is a bad thing. Larz is not in the wrong here and he is not the offender here.

The symbolism behind a hood WAS the racial slur!! Anyone who has been taught our history should be aware of that. This CHILD should know right from wrong by the time he is 16/17 and should present himself in that nature. Sure, I understand that “spirit” assemblies are a “big deal” when you are in high school. They should be a fun experience for everyone, so why not paint your body white or something of that nature. Don’t use a publicly recognized symbol of hate/terrorism to have a good time. I think it is unfortunate that he CHOSE to make the decisions he did. However, in doing so he now must be the example. That was his choice, and Lars has made his choice to stand up.

Unfortunately no matter where you go there will always be discrimination. Whether you are black, white, Asian, Indian, or any other ethnic origin. Washington, New York, LA they will always have a group of their population that will agree with the ignorance that Larz experienced at his school. As a matter of fact these places having larger populations, he will more likely experience these kinds of problems. It is a shame that in todays society we have to see things like this and try to attempt to justify the actions of the people who participate in such activities. The fact of the matter is THERE IS NO JUSTIFICATION FOR HATE!!!! Larz, keep up the good work. Just remember, hatred goes both ways. Keep true to yourself and your morals and identity. Don’t lash out at those who lash out at you. It only makes you the same as their hatred shows who they are.

Unfortunately racism knows no boundaries, it exists everywhere and affects everyone. It’s simply not true to suggest that minorities are the only ones affected by it.

As someone who’s lived in 2 of the three cities you suggest Howie, I can assure you that you cannot escape racism by running to LA or DC. And though I’ve never lived there, I can’t imaging NYC would be any different.

Racism is fueled by ignorance, and for that reason confronting it is always a better option than running. Lars you’re doing the right thing, especially because a lot of people seem content to overlook that it happens in our community too.

So Howie, I suppose if you were in an area that was predominately black and religious, you wouldn’t expect there to be any racism against white people? You need to wake up and realize that racism is prevalent among any dominate group.

      Larz,
I don’t know you, but I admire you for standing up against something that you knew to be wrong. More people need to stand up and provide a voice such as yours, myself included. I grew up in the South, with parents from the South, raised in a bigoted environment. I knew it was not the right way to treat people and have learned that when I see someone different than myself, I try to see the individual, not the difference. The fact that I am white and you are a person of color has no bearing on the spirit or soul of a man. The character of a person has nothing to do with color.

It is funny you should say that about white religious people here. It sounds like you have your own sort of intolerance going on so don’t count yourself out. Whenever you make such an intolerant and general comment about any group of people (which, unfortunately, we all probably have) it shows you are not necessarily better than the rest. It is the better man to bring people up, not tear them down.

No, this is what happens when people are ill-informed about culture and history. When you don’t learn from history you are bound to repeat it. I didn’t grow up here, but I assume history is being taught in it’s correct context and the students refuse to learn. If history isn’t being taught, then shame on our educucational system, otherwise, the students who engage in any type of racist antagonism need to bow their heads in shame, for doing it and for being ignorant of history. Really, the only way to combat racism is through education. Unfortunately, there will always be those who are too ignorant to learn. They will reap what they sow.

Howie, Intolerance is 100% the fault of how people are raised. No matter what religion, etc. It is ingrained at home. I happen to be Mormon and white. I Never have nor will ever tolerate “intolerance” I went on an LDS Mission to Brazil (Salvador) I love the people of that country and they too are very diverse in color, religion, etc…and unfortunately racism exist everywhere. It is true that many people, no matter what religion they are raised in, do not quite understand the true meaning of what life is all about… to love and relieve the pain of others…. There are definitely some extremely uneducated people in the world. Intolerance is definitely the result of lacking intelligence and lack of proper education. If people are LDS and have been intolerant, then the shame should be upon the heads of the parents and families. Christ only taught tolerance and love. The LDS religion teaches this. I am sorry that some people who just happened to be LDS, are intolerant…I feel sorry for them and they, like anyone else outside of the LDS Church, who expresses “intolerance” will stand before their God in the end and be judged according their own hearts. It is time to remember why we are here….. To Love and help relieve the burdens of our fellow man.

I believe the problem may be escalating now because children are not being taught the principle of respect. There is a saying that most of us old folks can relate to: “Those who don’t learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.”

    Larz,

It is sad that you are the only one who stood up against this action. Shame on those who sat around and allowed this to happen. It is disgusting to know this kind of behavior is tolerated. That is a hate crime, those involved should have been immeidately suspended from school and not allowed to participate in these kind of school activities in the future.
Your parents have taught you well. Keep standing up for what you believe in. Those kids are immature and hopefully will grow up and understand this kind of behavior is not ok.
Just know that you are supported. Stay strong.

As a parent of past Alta students, I commend you on your maturity and commitment to take a stance in the name of decency. We are a family of people who have been on the receiving end of people who think they are being “funny” or are simply ignorant. please do not judge the rest of the students by the action of this one. There are a lot of good people at Alta including teachers who care about everyone, race or religion not withstanding. Sadly, this is what is called life and simply something to learn to deal with. Congrats to your parents as well for raising a terrific son.

    Ashley….
After reading your vulgar response, I can only hope that someday you will realize that everything you said was completely overshadowed by the verbaige you used. Had you been on the receiving end of the actions, I am sure you would have a different opinion. You may not agree with Larz, but learn to disagree in a decent manner; people will be more willing to listen to you. I doubt many do the way you came across.

If you say you havent made racist jokes yourself in your life i dont believe it. Go join the NAACP with the likes of Al Sharpton and the REV. Jesse Jackson who wouldnt have a job if racism didnt exist so they create it where ever they go. Yes what the boy did was stupid. From what others are saying on this blog your not this noble black boy that your making yourself out to be. Bullying your fellow classmates? The boy who wears a kkk hood to school ought to be suspended for the simple fact that people like you have to blow it out of proportion and call attention to yourself like youve suffered slavery personally. I lived in an all black neighborhood as a child and can tell you that they were the most racist people ive ever encountered shoving dirt in my mouth and calling my mother a white ape. Im so sick and tired of the one sided bs of racism against black people i want to scream.

String him up in the tree in front of the school? No Larz took it 10 steps further. Now the boys family is being dragged through the mud ruining their reputations in the community. Also the School itself is being labeled as a racist breeding ground. All of this for publicity and now it is being used as a platform to sell his fathers book. joe i commend you for this statement. while reading through these comments i was beginning to think that no one would be agreeing with my views on this situation, especially from an outside perspective. i’ve had a class or two with larz and i can tell you right now that the kid seems to crave attention. even in class while the teacher was talking, he would constantly shout out without even being called upon. he’s also not the peace-seeking ghandi that he has so willingly claimed to be on television and in his blogs. i attended the spirit bowl where this event took place and i saw larz to be extremely aggressive, especially in the sock competition where he nearly strangled a kid in an attempt to remove the kid’s sock (the students were to obtain socks from the feet of the opposing team members). he should have contacted the administration or even the district council about this problem before submitting this outrageously overreactive blog to the media, who seems to rush at the mere mention of “racism” as it is seemingly a gold mine of news for them. this was no simple cry for help, this was a publicity stunt and a desperate call for attention. i agree that the boy (who i will not name) should be punished for this foolish act but what everyone has to realize is that he’s an adolescent and therefore does not see the full severity of this issue. to come at him like he’s an adult would be foolish. the boy has apologized to larz and everyone at our school both publicly and on facebook. he has also been suspended, is facing legal trouble and is suspected to go to court sometime soon (which i do not agree with). now we need to all just let things simmer down and quit giving larz the attention he has been so desperately hoping to obtain through all of this.

With this new multi-racial generation coming up in the world, I hope they can teach everyone to be more tolerant and non-judgemental. I applaude your boldness to stand up against rascism and its encouraging to see young men still standing up for their beliefs and morals. conformity is running rampant into today’s society and we need educated strong leaders like yourself in the upcoming generation. But one thing I do want to point out man is that I have heard you in the past use the N word, even in joking. I dont know if you believe you have the “right” to use that word as an African American or not but i believe that if you want to change the world you have to start with you. As minor or major as that may be to you it is still a derogatory term for African Americans. I dont know how often you still use that word… but you know. I would hope you would not make excuses for that word use but face the reality of what it is. As intolerable as this rascism may be i have seen you take past minor situations and blow them out of porportion. So i encourage you to “chill out” just a bit. The whole world isn’t out to get you. 🙂 Good luck with your cause, I support you bro. God Bless

Larz – I don’t know you but wanted to say kudos to you for handling this situation. My question is this; how is it that my son can’t carry a back pack or wear a beanie in school without getting “caught” but this child was allowed to appear in an assembly with something this obscene? As soon as he arrived to “entertain” everyone in his clever costume he should have been removed from the assembly and sent home. There is nothing that makes this acceptable and I would love to know why it was a student who had to finally deal with the situation.

Everyone – regardless of their race – should feel offended by the hatred and violence that is represented by what this kid brought in. There is no way any of us can look at the history and actions of the KKK and find humor. That some think it was a joke is disgusting.

It is amazing that you handled yourself in the way that you did when someone was doing something so cruel right in your face. I can believe that this stuff is still happening because it happened when I was in high school and I hear it from my siblings middle schools. I don’t think that there will be a time when everyone gets along and everyone is at peace unless a miracle 😉 happens. But I can say that you were very brave and very courageous for doing what you did. And the people that say otherwise are usually immature and just need the attention that doing those things gives them. Thank you Larz for your courage. Life is not fair, to ALL races. That’s life, noone ever said it was going to be easy.

I’m wondering if it was so appalling, why was lars the only one to voice his concerns?

I see appalling and wrong things all the time. So should I go tell that black person that they are being loud and obnoxious and inconsiderate to the people in the general area that can hear them? No, I laugh too myself and thank god I have more morals and respect than to look like them.

If I see a crime happening, sure I will contact the police department but I’m not going to go out of my way to stop it. My life is more important than getting killed because you feel everyone should say something.

You’re right, it is high school but most people do care. What was done was appalling and all we know is that Larz is the only one to voice his concerns, not that he is the only one who cares. You are wrong by saying that he should just deal with it because it happens all the time. Cancer happens all the time, are we supposed to ignore it and treat it like it doesn’t exist? Answer that question when it has directly effected you or a loved one. When we see something wrong we have an obligation to stop it or point it out to those that can, as Larz has. If you want to just let it go and walk away, then you are week and ignorant, and need to reevaluate the type of person you are or are becoming.

Because I take the abuse and am afraid to stand up against it. Because he has had enough. We can only take abuse for so long before we snap. He was strong enough to say how he really feels. When it happens to me, I make myself laugh about it so that I don’t get excluded. think of how long this will negatively haunt him. However, he has helped alot of us by speaking how ‘we’ really feel. Thanks Larz

If it is “just high school” and “nobody cares”? Try telling that to people like Anthony Hergesheimer or Cheyenne Williams. Maybe try telling that to the doctors who attended them or the police who arrested their attackers. Just because this incident happened between high school age kids doesn’t mean it’s any less hurtful. Would you say the same thing to Jewish teenagers who were pulled out of their high schools and taken to concentration camps during the Holocaust?

    Larz,

Thank you for bringing this to the attention of others. What one thoughtless person did was wrong…what the majority did by not taking a stand in the beginning with you when you removed the hood was inexcusable.

I am not biracial. I am Caucasian. I find what he did and others’ responses to what he did, appalling. I am happy to hear, however, that the Superintendent decided to investigate this.

I am equally appalled at the comments some are making on this post that spew hatred, racism, and gay bashing. Unfortunately, they probably did not come with these attitudes on their own and will have the support of their parents on this one.

I hope that by bringing this to light, that some will be encouraged to think about all hateful remarks whether they be about race, gender, religion, age, physical or mental disabilities, etc. Thank you for starting this much needed conversation.

It is a shame that some do not use their privilege (money, power and opportunity) to better the world, but to tear it down. Know that you may be a minority in your school, but you will have a majority of people who support you and this cause.

To some that may have been a harmless joke. But, had their relatives, ancestors, and loved ones been murdered, brutalized, and tortured by people wearing that symbol, they would not consider it the least bit funny.

Since when is it ok to make jokes about Jews? That’s just as bad as making jokes about blacks. Both are equally wrong, but you are saying both are ok, or thinking that people only protest about one. We should stop defending this form of humor that is all about putting other people down. Perhaps there are people who aren’t offended by this type of humor, or who think it’s ok to make fun of one group but not another . . . perhaps that is the way the world is, the “ways of people” as you said, but that doesn’t mean that’s the way it SHOULD be. We shouldn’t be content to let things which are wrong happen, just because that’s the “way it is.” We should strive to raise ourselves and others to a higher way of living(and I’m not talking economically). The only thing it takes for evil to win, is for good people to do nothing, to be content with the “way things are.”

Seriously, “they don’t believe in brawling without bringing a weapon to the fight. Typically they bring their friends and guns.” (No end parenthesis by the way.) How much more stereotypical can you be? Do you know how to speak for yourself or do you just believe everything that Hollywood tells you about different races, religions, and economic classes? You have no clue what is real and what is not real. So don’t be expressing an opinion until you have experienced being on the other side. Which you never will.

      • Posted by TA on March 23, 2011 at 5:57 am

you people are only making matters worse with these ridiculous arguments. there are faults on both sides: the student shouldn’t have done what he did because it was ignorant and offensive but at the same time larz is just as much at fault. larz should have sought help from the public system and school administration. take it from a student who saw the whole situation unfold first hand, for larz to go to the media immediately as swiftly as he did goes to show that he simply wanted one thing, attention, as almost all high school students do. both students are equally at fault, the case is settled. if you want to make a difference, get off the dam computer and go help out somewhere where it really matters. i for one find much more serenity in working in my community than engaging in arguments on the internet that will in the end go nowhere. you cannot change a person’s perspective and opinion on things no matter how hard you try. in the end, they will always have the last say on what their beliefs are because we are all human and have the right to choose under any circumstance. history has taught us this time and time again.

Also, I have been told to “chill out” about things that I felt strongly about, and while it is always good to think rationally and not get too caught up in pure emotion, it is important to stand up for what you know to be right. i’ve heard these slurs come out of his mouth as well, and i’ve had two classes with him so far this year. alta high school is just as racist as any other school in utah, or in the united states for that matter. this could have happened anywhere, but unfortunately it had to occur at my high school of which i am very displeased. for those of you on the outside who don’t know the full story behind this situation, i would suggest that you stay out of matters that do not concern you. thank you.

Props to you for standing up to the brothern. Its bad enough in Utah with the Sunday Klan around that you have to deal with these losers. When you get older, this type of thing hopefully will be laughable. Its a big world and these punks will be in for a hard life pulling that in that crap in the “real world”. Hopefully these boys names appear somewhere and in the future when they apply for a job or come up in conversation they will pay for their stupidity. Jackasses.

You do know that if you don’t like the religious surrounding’s you can leave the state. No Sunday klan is holding you back.

Hey man, you don’t know me, but I read about this on KSL.com, and I wanted to drop by and show my support to you.

I’m a 29 year old Pacific Islander, born and raised in Utah. In my lifetime, I’ve had the opportunity to serve 8 years in the United States Army, including overseas deployment.

I give you that bit of education in order to follow up with this one bit of information. The spoiled little brats who have mommy and daddy give them everything in this state will never truly know what these so-called “jokes” mean until they see the hatred of The South first hand. To them it’s nothing BUT a joke, because they’re raised privileged and away from anything that could really hurt their tender little feelings. They will never know what it’s like to be followed because of how they look. They will never know what it’s like to see someone leave a noose on their yard or in their tree and feel the anger of such a symbol brew up in their minds. You, as a person of mixed race, will always know more than them on such a subject.

One thing I will advise you on though, is to take certain things with a grain of salt. I admit that I can pull the so-called “race card” out faster than someone can call me a racial slur, but make sure that your actions show that you are standing up for what is right. Many of the people of color I’ve served with in the past have gone so far as to assume that “we’re better than some dumbass white people.” Don’t become the hater.

You got support on this down in Provo, where I’m at now. Keep it real, and screw what the rest of these CHILDREN say, because they’re straight clueless on real world issues like this.

I wish, oh i wish, that you could walk in our shoes which have trudged through societies mud and crap rather than being born to walk on a sidewalk where all you see is the pavement. No struggles, no fights for inclusion. I WISH, that you could see through our eyes that have seen societies ignorant hatred.. Oh how I wish. You have NO room to talk. You do not know how much stronger WE have to make ourselves emotionally to put up with the abuse of being talked to, treated, and looked at with hatred. You do not know, and unfortunately, you may never know.

Our struggles and pains are just as real as yours. However, we face struggles and pains everyday for one reason… the color we see when we look in the mirror. We have it hard in the world. You do not SEE or FEEL what we do. I can’t believe how ignorant people are thinking that skin pigment defines whether we are better than someone else or not still today. Ugh!!! I JUST WISH YOU COULD EXPERIENCE IT! We have learned to grow a thick emotional skin. I wish.

Acceptance only if it agrees with you, kiddies! There was a time kids could do stupid things and be allowed to grow. Now society is on pins and needles among different people, causing further separation. There was a time society would deal with these types of actions by shunning the person in the wrong, not taking away their right to expression. Liberty is no longer color-blind. The kid did nothing illegal or phsyically harmful to the other kid. So he got his feelings hurt. That’s life.

Everyone needs to open their eyes and also realize that jokes likes this one are definitely not funny. I wonder how many of those people that have told you to lighten up have diverse backgrounds? Also this needs to be addressed by the school and school district and appropriate disciplinary action taken, not just a slap on the wrist. This person needs to realize that this is not to be tolerated. Also if this is swept under the carpet what will that student to next time? I wish you the best and God bless you and your family.

There are a lot of sick things that happen there and a lot of it is totally ignored by the teachers, probably because half of them are coaches. The disgusting things that students at Alta get away with become part of society. It doesn’t matter if the act wasn’t meant to be racist, it still represents a satanic thing that is still practiced in society today. Something may start as a joke, but then as you become comfortable with it, it becomes real. Alta needs to change and it has to start with the students.

I read an article just a while back. I can’t remember what city it was talking about but you have professional black citizen’s that are discriminating against other black people moving into their neighborhood.

Why? Because as I have said before, there is a difference between a ‘n’ and a black person. If those black people had less class than they do they would probably refer to those individual’s they don’t want moving into their interratial neighborhood as “n’s”.

If it is not a bad word for a black person to use than it should not be seen as a bad word for a white person to use it.

How they went after thieves, wife beaters, cheaters and people that didn’t support their family?…oh but it’s much easier to just say the KKK did evil bad things and curl up in the in the fetal position and cry about how bad life is. Give me a break. But I do like how it’s not racists that there is BET, NAACP, United Negro College fund, so on and so forth….but…BUT….if I wanted to start a “poor white kid college fund”….or WET….or National Association for the Advancement of Caucasian People…I would definitely be a racist….face it…people with “colored” skin are NOT the only underprivileged people in this world. Growing up in the South, where even the older black men drove 4 wheel drive trucks, WITH Confederate flag plate on the front and they would bitch about the way young men (generally black) wore their pants down around their knees. My half Mexican wife hates going downtown with me because the first ass I see hanging out I make it a point to talk loud enough for them to hear me and say “well my day is complete, I got to go out and see a guys ass, I can sleep better tonight!”

I love how people use racism against whites as a defense for racism against blacks. I tend to agree that those organizations you listed are counter productive, and racist in nature, and that there are plenty of people out there who are equally ill-treated, but that doesn’t mean that just because everyone is ill-treated that the ill-treatment is ok. It doesn’t mean that the way the KKK acted/acts is ok, or that it’s ok to treat the KKK as humorous. All of it is wrong. We must judge people’s actions, not their race.

Yes you do, if you so choose. It’s called “freedom of expression”. As long as a person isn’t physically harmed, which laws already protect them from, what right do we have to stop them from expressing themselves, even if it’s offensive? How can we weed out the good from the bad if we make one or the other be so behind closed doors alone? How can people grow as individuals if they’re not allowed to express and work through whatever they need to become themselves? Homosexuality offends many Christians. Should gay acceptance stop being taught in schools? A Catholic priest may remind a boy of past abuse by another of his kind. Should Catholic priests no longer be allowed seen in public? I’d rather live in a country with free expression than one that controls every person’s actions and thoughts. Everyone’s been offended, made fun of and called names. He caused no illegal physical harm. In fact the half-white kid touched his possessions. Get over it.

I live in Orem and it is bad here too. From harassment from police to citizens who do not even know me. I’ll be walking down the sidewalk and a couple of guys in a pick up truck will drive past and tell me to go back to Mexico or call me a “spic.”

But do you think this was actually hatred based? Or just ignorance at it’s basest form? To me it sounds like the later. Unfortunately, you will find this type of behavior anywhere you find a majority/minority situation. Some of the posts elude to the fact that it only happens in Utah, which is unfortunately untrue as well.

I don’t know Larz, nor was I at the assembly. But I do go to Alta, and I think people just shake things like this off their shoulder way too much. With the history of our country, and what the KKK has done, it was inappropriate to wear a KKK mask.
I know Mackay, and I could imagine he just thought he was being clever by wearing the mask since the seniors were all in black, it is clever, but not right. He didn’t really think it through before putting that mask on.
Everyone is saying it wasn’t aimed at Larz, but everyone also knows the things the KKK has done, and other African American people at Alta may have just been like, whatever.. i know thats not what it was meant for, but I’m sure some were offended, which is entirely understandable.
I never thought it would become such a huge scandal, but maybe this will show students everywhere how seriously some people take racism, and maybe, just maybe, it will change.

Hey, I understand why you felt the need to make this known to everyone in Utah. I’m of Argentinian descent and I feel lately this “racial” humor has increased dramatically. A few years ago I didn’t hear anybody talking trash about “Mexicans”. People in Utah have grown more and more ignorant over the years and something needs to open up their eyes and see just how racist they really are.

No, people were a lot more tolerant in Utah, because their exposure to all the richness of multiculturalism was extremely limited. The less people of color or different ethnicity in a homogeneous area, the more tolerant they tend to be of difference.

Your problem is that the people of Utah are less ignorant of what happens when the rainbow hordes of diversity invade their pristine state. Sorry you had to learn the hard way, Utah!

BTW, for all you people sniveling about racism and intolerance, there is nothing forcing you to stay in Utah. Go back to where you came from instead of intruding yourself on the people of Utah and pulling all your rude antics and then whining, because it is not appreciated. If all these people are being evil to you, shun them. Leave!

Stop making things up. its annoying. your making alta look bad for no reason. Mackay is not racist at all! and if you actually knew him you would know that! Get over it. its pathetic. it wasnt pointed towards your race. it was pointed towards the seniors who were “black”. nothing at all to do with the african american race. You shouldnt be talking, i’ve heard many people talk about the hurtful names you have called students at alta high. and you actually intend to! maybe someone should tell on you, bring the whole world in to everything wrong and hurtful you’ve done! how would you like the news to hear about all your mistakes? yeah, not too fun huh? no ones perfect kid. your blowing this way out of proportion.

I can guarantee that a good majority of the people who attend Alta High School have all thought about trying to better our school in some way, but had no backbone to actually take any action because they fear that it will backfire on them in a negative way. Larz, I fully support you with your cause. And those of you who post profanities about him or his cause, just know that it embarrasses me to know that I attend high school with people like you. Thank you Larz for what you’ve done for our school. A lot of people can learn from your efforts.

After reading the comments I feel there are far too many who are trying to stereotype “Utahns” as racist. This ignorant and intollerant behavior occurs everywhere not just Utah. Unfortunately, ignorance abounds everywhere. I grew up in the south and know of the hideous actions of the KKK. It isn’t funny, it isn’t a joke and it definately is not appropriate to parody it in school. I believe you took the proper action bringing it to the attention of the administration. But lets be careful not to label every white student at Alta as a racist, that would be equally racist. The administration should take approproate action and discipline as needed. But what a few do out of stupidity should not define the whole race, religion, nationality, etc. That is just as dangerous a trap and equally wrong.

I wanted to let you know I think it was remarkably brave to speak out against the ignorance and hate in your school. Many adults would not have the integrity to stand up and say this is wrong – and it is. I really don’t care what excuse people provide for this, ignorance, joking or any other cover for racism only allows it to continue.

My experience here in Utah is that many people are ignorant to the prevalence of ‘casual’ racism. You don’t need to accept this type of behavior in your classroom or your community.

Congratulations on putting racists in the spotlight – they don’t like it there. Stay strong and know you have support.

I Can see both sides of this. It’s true that we do have problems with racism in Utah, America, The World. It’s every where. Basically it’s just telling people that they don’t fit your view of perfect and that they’re not worth loving because of that. What the kid did is pretty messed up.

However We don’t really know racism in america anymore. In todays world you bring up that a person is black (I don’t mean this bad it’s just the color they are, I’m not going to insult them by calling them colored because I’m afraid of political correctness) and it can very easily be called out on racism even if it’s just a comment.

At school for art my friend was going over the color spectrum and they were getting the whole all colors together make black review. A kid who didn’t know that Commented with “Oh so that’s why Alex is black” He didn’t mean it harmful it was just a understanding moment. He was immediately told to tell every one sorry for being racist and to never talk like that again.

This is a bit of an extreme example but really this kind of thing happens every where. Have you people met anyone from a country that is truly racist. I know a guy that grew up in South Africa. When he came to the United states and converted to a church that accepts Black people he had to work for weeks to get over the idea that had been ingrained in him since childhood. “Blacks are not people” Not just that they’re different. He Believed with all his being that they were not people and didn’t have the rights that people do. They were a different species

Looking at that makes the way that blacks are seen in America and Utah seem pretty posh. Sure were not all the way there, and yes the joke the kid “played” was extremely untasteful and possibly a cry for attention.

But Just realize the racism that people know here isn’t racism.

I congratulate you for standing up for your beliefs however, and am all for the whole getting people out of the ignorant phase. I’m just not sure it’s the same ignorance.

I have read all of these post with great interest as I have two nephews that go to Alta. It does not surprise me that something like this happened. Was it intentional, I don’t believe so, that said I REALLY don’t think you kids today fully understand what the Klan was about. Although I commend you for standing up for something that is wrong, I too think that you took it too far. I can see going to the school adminstration and complaining but going to the news media was over the top. Apparently the student that did this has been punished for his stupidity and even tried to apologize. But apparently that was not enough for you. What you failed to realize is that where you don’t necessarily live an exemplary lifestyle (being a bully is not exemplary) The news media is not biased. Anything that can be said that is against yourself and your family will be and it will be published in black and white or technicolor. If you were an outstanding person who had never wronged anyone you had a golden oppurtunity to show how racially biased your school is. Unfortnately, because of acts you have chosen to do, that oppurtunity has failed.

    Larz –

Keep up the good work, bud. You did the right thing. You stood up for not only your race, but racial prejudices alike. This should NOT be tolerated ESPECIALLY in a high school. Reading some of your fellow classmate’s comments have disgusted me, but I hope you continue to hold your head high.

As for the accusations of you being a troublemaker yourself, if it is true, now is the time to take what you’ve learned with this situation and be the mature, and well educated person you truly are. Don’t let these kids, and I really do mean KIDS, get you down. I sure hope that the school takes into account the seriousness of not only the student that had worn the KKK hat, but your classmates who don’t take something like this seriously.

Highschool can be some of the hardest years. I am a Caucasian female, and can’t even begin to know what you feel, but I can say that your peers will not go everywhere with you in life. Keep your chin up, kid. You’ve got a good head.

I have very close Hispanic, Asian, Black and white friends. We sometimes tease each other about our race. None of us are offended because we know we respect each other and we are close friends. The joking is taken in just and is acceptable because we all share in the joke both ways.
However, racist jokes have no place in an environment where the parties involved may be offended. That is the difference.
My culturally diverse friends know I will get a good laugh as they call me a honky. We are close enough friends to be able to do that. We have an inner trust and mutual understanding that creates a peaceful environment.
When that type of relationship does not exist in an environment, racist jokes are an insult, disrespectful and can be considered a threat.
I support your voice as you stand up against this type of behavior. The school better understand this is serious stuff.

My skin is not white like ‘everyone else’. I went there for one year. Did not feel included at all. I have fled to a school more accepting and with well educated students. However, living in Draper, I still deal with it. At a church service, during Sunday School just this past Sunday, I was asking the teacher a question. Right when I open my mouth, an ignorant student (attending Alta believe it or not) said, “Shut up! Only speak when spoken to.” Alta is the worst school I ever went to. My friend (he is white for you ignorant people that think it matters) fled with me after going to Alta. He has a different style of clothing, music, etc. and he realized that if he isn’t mainstream, he will also be excluded or people will judge him without meeting him.

Trust me, it’s not just Alta. There is a great majority of the Utah population that is ‘racist’. They have no reason to be racist though. I hear stories all the time about other Utah schools and how the kids were disliked/hated because of race. It’s a problem that the schools do not see and I am glad that Larz was strong enough to bring this to attention. I do not blame all of Alta. And I know it was just a joke that was in poor taste. But this situation will definitely bring the very real problem of racism in Utah to light. It sucks that some people become generalized because of the mistakes made by their fellow race members. That’s why people are thinking all of Alta is racist. Why people things anyone with a turban is a terrorist. Why people think all blacks are thugs. And so on. The actions of a small portion of people belonging to a certain race, religion, family, etc. are what people base the rest of those people on. However, as I said, I know that not all of Alta is like that. But I can assure you that others will feel differently than me because they make assumptions based on a single negative experience. Which is understandable because negative experiences are more likely to be remembered because they hurt for a very long time.

    Hi Larz,
As a fellow alumni of Alta High I just wanted to convey my feelings of what you witnessed. I was completely appalled to say the least when I heard of this on the news this morning.
Racist was never a term associated with Alta when I went to school. A little stuck up but never racist. I was never bullied, never called names. Being non LDS I was sure that I would have had a problem but that never was an issue. So to hear this is going on at Alta is pretty embarrassing.
I hope the staff takes this seriously and puts a stop to it immediately. High school should be a positive experience that everyone should take advantage of and it’s horrible that fellow students feel they can take this positive experience away. You’re a role model for all those out there who are a victim to school bullying that you don’t have to put up with it. Way to go to take a stand 🙂

By allowing students to have a flippant attitude towards racism we are allowing them to think that bullying and racism are okay. They are not okay in any way, shape, or form. Whether this was directed at Lars or not, is beside the point. By allowing the student to think it is okay and for the administrators to be oblivious of it, can only be described as neglect. I have lived in the South and the Bible Belt and while I was not discriminated against because of my race I was discriminated against because of my religion. I know how it feels whether it’s directed at you or not. In either case it is not acceptable.

The KKK derived their costumes from Catholic Priestly apparel worn during holy processions. To have demeaned a very holy appearance to the Catholics with racism and violence is absurd, yet it has happened. Why would we allow our children, in any way, to continue that horrible tradition? It embarasses me that this would happen in any form. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure their children understand right and wrong and so many parents have gotten so soft on that teaching. We can’t allow ourselves or our children to think that this kind of act is okay. It is not okay.

I am impressed that you did something to stand up against something that you felt is very wrong. I grew up in Utah with a Caucasian father and Japanese mother. I was born here in Utah and for most of my life I didn’t have to deal with much racism. It wasn’t until the 7th grade at Hilcrest Jr High where one boy started taunting me and making racial comments toward me. I didn’t know what to do about it so I ignored it. A few years later he was a teacher’s aid and was responsible for getting student’s their supplies and he would never give me mine. He told me that I didn’t deserve to be there and I should just go back to my own country. I don’t remember ever having any sort of relationship with this person other than that he felt a need to harass me for the only reason that I was biracial. I immediately told the teacher of the incident and the teacher told me there was nothing he could do and “kids will just act like kids.” I am happy to hear that you are not allowing this kind of racism slip by. They are events like these that will open people’s eyes to what really goes on. I completely understand how it feels to be in high school and hear so many racist jokes and comments when the people making the remarks don’t really know how hurtful and offensive what they’re saying really is. I’m sure I have been guilty of saying things that I didn’t fully understand because I’ve heard my friend’s or family say the same things. I’m disappointed that a few of the comments are so closed minded. I don’t know how you are in school but taking this stand has been a good thing. We are not to only be respectful of people’s different races. We are to be respectful of others for the pure fact that we are all human and trying to get through this life and nobody is better than another. It’s good for this to particular thing thing to be recognized so people are aware that racism occurs everywhere even here in Utah.

When you say “My experience is that to be a non-white individual is a bad thing at Alta High School”…I would disagree. I would say being a non-white individual anywhere in UTAH is a bad thing. I don’t think you need to lighten up. It’s obvious you are an intelligent student. I hope you can move on, graduate and get out of this state. My husband and I are as white as it gets, yet we have a son we send to private school in hopes of shielding him from (at least some) of the idiots here. Unfortunately, we don’t have the option to move. I hope your father’s book gets published. I would LOVE to read it.

If your thinking larz is overreacting on this matter, than you obviously dont understand his point of view. There are somethings you just dont joke about and that includes wearing a white-hooded cloak to school. People joke about things all the time even molestation. But if someone pretended to molest a child that would be a different story.

Thank you larz for making this and I hope you keep it updated because I intend on saving it to my favorites.

Thank you for stepping forward and speaking about this issue. I have 2 children that are bi-racial and it is very hard to hear how cruel some people can be. For the people on here that have posted things stating Larz is overreacting or is a trouble maker or is pathetic. You people disgust me. You have no idea what it is like to be a minority. Your parents have taught you that it is ok to be disrepectful to minorities or that this kind of thing is no big deal. ITS A VERY BIG DEAL!!!!!!!!!! The kid that dressed as a KKK needs to pay the price for his stupidity. Hopefully he and his parents learn from this as well as every one else. This is completely unacceptable and he needs to pay for what he has done. Larz….. I support you 100%
Thank you again for making a stand and for speaking out on this. My kids are lucky to have some older kids that are willing to stick up for their backgrounds and not just sit back and do nothing about it.

I fear for the future of our society. This nation was built by people who were fleeing persecution of their beliefs. People who wanted to be treated as equals. There has been blood shed in this country for those rights. It was never stated that equality should only be for people of one race, color, religion, but equal rights for every man, woman, and child. The Civil War was fought because people finally realized that human slaves were not receiving these rights. Even after the Civil War was over, the battle to mentally understand EQUAL RIGHTS was, and still is, far from over.
I read all the comments left here from students at Alta High that are upset over Larz speaking out. Saying he should laugh it off, and ignore it. Racist jokes, no matter who they target, should never be laughed off. They are demeaning to the group of people they are targeting. I would hope that anyone who sees, or hears a demeaning joke like that would speak up, no matter what race you are. Until you all learn to respect one another, there will never be equality. Until there is equality among everyone, then this nation will never be strong. I love America, but I see in the news, and around the world, we are not as GREAT as we once were, and it will only continue to spiral further down, until we can learn to treat each other as equals. It is up to the future generation to learn to do that, and from the comments left here by “Alta High’s Finest” we can only hope that a future generation is up to the task. And it is not only these young kids that are the “shining examples of Americas future”, but if you read the news across the country, you see the lack of respect, the ignorance, violence, etc. Unfortunately it is not completely their fault though. The educational restrictions that we have created, and the disciplinary actions we have limited in the country have a lot to do with it. Kids today believe they can do anything, and the laws we have placed will protect them. To a certain degree they are correct. As I said in the beginning, I fear for the future of our society. Please everyone, educate yourself of the past, don’t ignore the things going on around you, and do not be afraid to stand up for yourself, and others. This nation would not have been founded, had people not taken action for what they believed.

Saying “n” and voicing your support of the word is no different than saying it. I’m very sorry to say that I agree with her on one fact…Everyone is racist to a certain point. But saying that does not make it in any shape or form ok do be racist. Also it seems as if all of her time is spent on this blog bashing anyone who has anything good to say about the situation. It is sad that someone in high school, so close to being considered an adult, could be so immature and uneducated. It is also sad when you can’t voice your opinion without being vulgar, and inappropriate. That is the furthest thing from being an adult in my mind.

    Larz,
Good for you for sticking up for what you believe. It doesn’t matter if it was meant as a joke or not. The KKK was known for hating, torturing, and killing colored people, Not people wearing black shirts. I am white and I would have felt the same way. Just because no other colored people made a stand, doesn’t mean they weren’t offended or hurt. You were just the one to do something about it.

This turning a blind eye to the racist culture here in the area helps my family cope. It’s overwhelming to face such institutionalized ignorance. The culture here is ingrained with racism in so many levels. We have dealt with racism from students, teachers, neighbors and even a principal in a nearby Jr High School. Dealing with it in a lighthearted manner is key because any reaction confirms excess sensitivity and invites exclusion as Larz has experienced.

Are you serious? Bready didn’t say anything against Equal rights? Here is the first sentence he wrote “If your black and are offended, go back to where you belong.” I think that Larz has the RIGHT to be offended. The rest of the sentence is not about Bready not wanting to be surrounded by “Drama Queens” either. That sentence in, and of itself, is very racist. I don’t care about the situation at Alta High’s assembly, if it was blown out of proportion, that is horrible. What is shocking is to see all the comments left here by self proclaimed Alta students that are racist. If you are supporting comments like these, and thinking they are not about racism, then you need to shut the Hell up, cause you do not know what you are talking about.

It doesnt matter if it was a joke or not, its not funny. And the kid that did it should be ashamed. Who cares if he has black friend that thought it was funny, thats because they are his friend. I am white and I am disgusted. DISGUSTED. Yeah, maybe the kid didnt intend to offend people…. but what was he trying to accomplish then? Trying to be funny? The kkk has murdered and tortured people in our society. What part of murdering and torture is funny in any way? What people dont realize is this isnt the only racist incident at alta. yeah yeah we all make racial jokes sometimes, but you have to know when your going to far. I think Larz did the right thing. and to all those people saying he is stupid and a crybaby, you are the ones that need to grow up. this is not funny in any way shape or form. i have a class with Larz and he is a cool kid. i am new to alta and this makes me ashamed that i even go there. you would think that because we are in HIGH SCHOOL and about to be adults that we could kinda act like we had brains.

Larz i understand why you were mad, but it was just a joke. and you are now lying to all these news stations about the whole story.i was there and i saw what happened. you did not take off his hood or anything. the kid onle had it on for about 10 seconds anyway. you ran out after the assembly and told on him. i’m not saying anything bad on you. i’m just saying this could have been solved much easier and without your lies to the news stations. Also i have seen you at school. you bully other kids and say racial slurs against others. and some are jokes and we understand it so we let it go, thats exactly what this was so let it go. now your jeopardizing this kids future just because your mad and want your 15 min of fame. grow up. It is becoming a HUGE deal now. These kids making the comments are now just confirming the very thought that the story brought to all our minds, “is the Utah Educational System really failing in teaching the kids of today about the wrongs of the past?” Seriously, you want to help bring the truth to light, prove us wrong, and have Alta High students show they aren’t racist.

If someone threatened to kill the President of the United States and had their threat heard by an outside listener that takes matters seriously, it would not be turned into “a bigger deal than what it was.” It would be taken as seriously as it should be taken. Threats aren’t jokes, racism isn’t a joke, suicide isn’t a joke… Their are a lot of topics that should not be joked about including racism. People take serious ideas seriously. I know for a fact that if my friend joked about being suicidal, I would be concerned too. These are serious issues that need serious attention.

This is pathetic, Larz claims at the reality of the “racism” that goes on in Alta high school. What a great attempt to target Alta’s large white public, when from what I can see there was never any real racism at Alta, you will never come to appreciate real racism Larz, you think this kid had intentionally tried to recreate racism in the form of the KKK? Are you serious? You even go as far as comparing this “racism” to Nazi like, saying he was hailing Hitler a “racist supporter”? You truly believe someone of our modern generation would contain the true hatred and psychology to assume such an attitude in this setting? Does he resemble what these people were like? Your motifs are skewed, you have blindly assumed your view on society? You were obviously offended, but the justification for you statements are wrong! I am appalled to the extent of which you took this. You disgust me with how you applied racism to this. As a current senior at Alta High School and an observer attending the Spirit Bowl on Thursday, I feel this post is blowing things extremely out of proportion. I do not condone in any way the happenings of the junior boy who wore the white pillow-case on his head (clearly meaning to reference the KKK) or support him in any way. What he did was stupid and thoughtless. However, it was not meant to specifically target the African-Americans or other minority races in Alta High School in any form; it was meant to “poke fun” at the seniors as a class (ta the Spirit Bowl, the juniors who wear white and seniors who wear black have always been rivals in bulk, competing to win the “spirit bowl” competition through games). He did not mean to offend Larz or any minority race. This student is a good kid, brought up in a good family. He feels terrible and is serving his school punishment, and this will obviously be something that follows him for the rest of his life. Don’t make it worse for him than it already is and will continue to be. It is just getting ridiculous how much torment he is receiving from outside sources who are reading biased one-sided opinions from Larz in the media.

As a white girl from Southern California, I have felt what it is like being the minority. Living outside of Los Angeles, my schools were 30-40% Caucasian, the rest African-American, Asian, and Hispanic. Frankly, the thing about moving to Utah and attending Alta High School that surprised me and still makes me laugh is the fact that the white kids here want to fit in with the minorities. They think the African-Americans and Polynesians are cool, and want to be in their crowd. They respect them and want to participate in activities with them.

I just find it hard to believe, after attending this school for nearly three years, that racism is as prevalent in Sandy/Draper as Larz makes it appear. I am not saying EVERYONE is not racist, or NO ONE has made a racial slur in our school, but I believe that these comments are fanning the flames, that everyone is being riled up in ways beyond what is necessary.

I am deeply sorry that this event offended you or anyone else. It should never have taken place and you were justified in contacting the administration. It is just very hard to observe these comments and not help but express my opinion concerning the matter, and help others to not stereotype Alta High School as ignorant, lacking “grammar, reasoning, diction, or decorum”. We have very high testing results, a very high percentage of kids taking Advanced Placement and Concurrent Enrollment classes. I believe that as a student body we strive to do what is right to promote goodness in our school.

I just want the readers to know that as students of Alta High School, we DO NOT support the KKK or anything associated with the demeaning of minority races, or any race for that matter. I just hope that as a school we can redeem ourselves and let others know that we truly strive for great things and not anything that would be misconstrued as demeaning in any way.

If you drop a brick on someone’s foot by accident, does it magically not hurt them because you didn’t MEAN for it to hurt them?

      No?

Then why do you think that wearing a KKK hood, the symbol of an organization that systematically murdered, terrorized, and intimidated African-Americans for over a century in this country, is somehow going to be LESS hurtful, simply because you weren’t intending any harm?

      Think about it.

Clearly the kid who wore the hood has been failed completely by the educational system and by his parents.

There is a little bit of truth in every joke.

However, the only people laughing at this are those that actually think there is some truth to it. The people that didn’t think this was funny are the ones that find absolutely no truth in it. No truth in the ignorance of people believing that skin color makes someone more or less supreme.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” -Martin Luther King Jr.

I guess that Martin Luther King Jr. is still waiting for that very dream to come true.

Here at alta highschool there has become a sense of unity with the white and black kids where most white kids here feel perfectly comfotable saying the n word of making racial jokes. lars is a new student from a different state and was not able or did not want to adapt into this environment where black kids are comfortable with it and dont care. larz needs to learn that everything is in good fun and none of it is actually racist. he took it way to far by going to the media and he knows it.

Sitting on the senior Side We all saw this kid stand up in his white hood and pop a hitler salute.
The kid shouldn’t have done it, He’s an idiot for doing so, But honestly It was just a joke. The Juniors color is White hence: “White Power” becoming a popular theme for the juniors in the spirit bowl. The kid was being stupid, Trying to be supportive of alta while still making a joke out of it. Needless to say it was wrong but i think a lot of people have made a bigger deal out of this than it is.

I don’t think it was made into a bigger deal than it is. Dressing up as a symbol of racism is never okay and more kids should have stood up for the right. That is not supportive to Alta High.

He did it as a joke aimed at the seniors because they were wearing black. Mackay was not trying to be racist. I have talked to other black kids at alta and they all got a kick out of it because they knew it was meant to be a joke. please do not post on here that you are proud of larz when you do not know what happened. please do a little more research on things then just watching ksl, and then talk about it like you know what happened.

I just want to tell you it is not like this in other parts of the country. I am really sorry you had to see and deal with this. I had a terrible time with the ignorance and lack of acceptance in Utah, mostly in Alta.

As for some of these comments, I am blown away and amazed at the ignorance. What this kid did was clearly offensive, whether he intended or not, and he should be punished accordingly. These kids think they are invincible because of this protected bubble they live in.

I am not racist and I know the people I hang out with are not racist, but whenever I am asked what school I go to everyone has begun to ask if I am racist or they give me angry looks. I will not be put into a group just because of the school I go to.

We all know who did this, and it just shows what he has to do to get extra attention, and feel superior to others around. Hes just a rich spoiled kid, that one day will have to grow up, and wont have his parents to baby him anymore. I hope he is taking this seriously, and actually feels sorry.
Larz, i think its great that you are standing up for yourself, not just cuz your black man, but for others also. KKK isnt just against blacks.. and a racial thing against all.

  147. Being there at the assembly a few things Larz said is incorrect. Larz did not rip the mask off of the students head. Another thing is that the students was not saluting Hitler. The student had 1 finger up pointing out number 1 for junior class. The news needs to see the other side of the story and get the other side of the story out. Instead of just cutting those parts off on the interviews and only getting what the news wants to be heard. I would say that Larz is taking advantage of where he lives. No one has a dislike here for another race honestly. If you maybe went back east you might really get results of what racism is. Don’t take advantage of where you live bro.

Then it paints a very different picture! racism has never been an issue when I went there, but there is always going to be something! someone will always be picked on for something stupid, its pretty sad how high school kids act. they act like they have lived and are so mature but really have no damn idea about the real world they are soon to face! you know Larz I’m truly sorry for what you are going threw, Im glad you spoke out and didnt keep your mouth shut. I dont want to offend you at all, but I’ve been hearing rumors (I dont know if thay are true or not) that you are posting comments under false names. That means you are fanning the flames. Is this for attention. If you want this kind of “racist” stuff to stop, then stop putting on peoples’ minds.

I laughed when I heard about you complaining that the school wasn’t doing anything about this. Didn’t they call the kids to the office? Didn’t he get suspended? Yeah I’m pretty sure he did.

“If your child has to attend Alta High School and they are nonwhite just know that the chances of being treated unethically are very high.” That is the biggest stereotype I have ever heard! Maybe if you would stop bloggin then you could see that more then 75% of the kids at Alta are very nice kids.

Also I think you need to relize that pranks and jokes are going to happen at the spirit bowl. It’s the SPIRIT BOWL, for crying out loud last year they threw paint all over the court.

I hope that later in life you relize that you overreacted to a mean joke that anyone else would laugh at or would have been mad for a couple hours and then get over it.

    Hey Larz,
I was, at one time, a bi-racial student at Alta High as well. I commend you for your courage because almost 10 years ago, this same type of behavior was present at Alta. It wasn’t to the extent of this act, but thinking it was ok to say the “N” word, or make “joking” (aka IGNORANT) comments were things i always had to deal with. Back then I wish I would’ve had the courage to take a stand, but instead i try to pretend like they didn’t “know any better” and it wasn’t until college that I really saw how wrong and offensive it was. I was angry with myself for allowing it to happen. Because of all of the ignorance, i have since left Utah and i vow never to return nor raise my bi-racial children there. Good job! I know you don’t know me, but I’m so proud of you! It’s just another step in the right direction for “us”;)

I am amazed by the writings on this blog by the teenagers/students. Some actually know what the big deal in history is and some are so small minded and rude that they may never really see what this really is all about. I am saddened that in Utah we are raising children to act this way.
It may of been the “funny boy” in the Jr class. But at sometime we all need to grow up and look around before trying to make a show for our friends. This clearly hurt some people. I personaly would have been upset to see this take place on public school grounds.
kids will be kids but with every choice there is a reaction and from there sometimes punishment.
The kids of Alta High School could really learn allot from this and it could really be a great teaching tool if taught in the correct way.

Because I am a minority here and did not want to make a fuzz of it, I sucked it in. There is a kid in my math class that were always raised his hand and said, Heil Hitler! Then tell me to go back to where I come from. I was embarrassed and didn’t know what to say. You kind of represented me in a sense. Somehow, I think white people will hate us more, but if they already hate us anyway, your action is a great cause for all of us, minorities, here in Utah. Thank you.

I bet that many of you are good LDS kids who hold the priesthood, Blessing and passing the sacrament on Sunday and then from Mon thru Sat you are racists. All these childish acts need to stop. You bring shame to this great state. The consequences of this incident will bring shame to all of us who live here in Utah. When CNN and the media got ahold of this story we are going to be ashamed of this childish act or so called joke. I have nieces and nephews attend your institution and I hope they are not going to be treated the way Larz been treated. By the way I am polynesian.

Wow, I am so amazed to read through these comments see the lack of responsibility and judgement these kids are taking with this issue. I understand the Immaturity does play a part but with that said, where were the “adults” who should know better? Even if the child, who was obviously raised to think this way, was lacking in judgement, does the school not have adults who should be supervising and stop this behavior before it starts? My question is… do the “adults” at that school think along the same lines so it was not seen as an issue??? A scenario, what if a person were to wear this same thing to work or to church or lets say, to the mall, I wonder… what kind of reaction would that person receive…?? My guess is, at work, they would be sent to HR and fired, at church… they would be ..hummm not sure how that would play out… at the mall, I would think that security would nab the person and take them to security for questioning… and would see if they were packing a weapon. So you see, I don’t think it was “innocent” and the “adults” and the “children” should be ashamed of themselves.

I am appalled to know that so many juvenille teenagers are verbally taunting Larz for being a young man of character by standing up for his beliefs and convictions. I am a 44 year old white single parent who raised 3 boys and would not tolerate the ignorance displayed here from my own son’s or their friends.

As a college student who is emersed in sociology the discrimination, bigotry and self righteousness of those of you who believe you are superior to any other human being is a disgrace to yourselfs and humanity as a whole. It is bad enough that it has taken generations to even progress to where we are at today with creating equality, but to have this type of display anywhere private or public is not tolerable.

To those of you who are choosing to run your mouths and opinions aimlessly, keep this in mind. “What you choose today shapes the person you become tomorrow!”

Larz I do not know you personally, however I as a fellow citizen in the community am proud of you and will stand by you! Please do not listen to the pointless and cruel rants of these mindless people.

Continue to be proud and know that you are an individual with backbone and that standing up for your beliefs is never wrong! It is a shame that these selective individuals are so narrow minded to think that they are better than anyone else.

God bless you, your family and this community and state!

Growing up in Utah I’ve never encountered anything like this, and I am deeply sorry and saddened by not only this event but by the way you’ve been treated by your “classmates” in these comments. You are a brave young man for standing up against this. To all of you who have posted hateful comments: what is your problem? You may not like this young man and he may be unpopular at school, but he’s brave and willing to stand up against hatred, while all of you look like backwoods hicks with no clue about what’s right and wrong. Pull your heads out of your collective teenage rear ends and realize that there is NO SITUATION in which the KKK or Hitler or anything else like that is funny. EVER. Furthermore, how many of you went to seminary before hopping on here and posting hateful and obscenity-laden comments? If you believe a single word of anything you’ve ever heard in church or from your seminary teacher, you ought to be deeply ashamed. What a bunch of foolish children. Keep standing up for what’s right, Larz.

  172. Let’s not forget that our United States Constitution — more specifically, our Bill of Rights — ALLOWS us to be racists, bigots, morons, and fools. The student who wore the hood had a RIGHT to act foolish; likewise, the student (Larz) who squealed to daddy had a RIGHT to speak against the foolishness.

I’m not a racist — and for good measure, I’m not a bigot, a moron, or a fool. I believe that racism is evil and I believe that bigotry and foolishness are also evils — evils our society faces on a daily basis.

But whether or not we face these evils, we do not have the right to THINK, SPEAK, or ACT for anybody but ourselves. Or, in other words, you can only control the thoughts, the words, and the actions of ONE PERSON: YOU.

Don’t ever attempt to think, speak, or act for anybody other than yourself.

Here’s one final thought: if racism is hatred…and hatred is wrong…is hating racism wrong? Is hating hatred wrong?

    Learn to TOLERATE intolerance.

If you believe so powerfully in the Constitution why don’t you tell somebody to walk along a busy road in a white clock and pointed hat and tell them to bring the Constitution with them. They won’t get far.

If somebody “acts” for for themselves by wearing something such as this, noone will just turn their head the other way and think nothing of it, they’re involving people BECAUSE of racism and racism is rarely ever over-looked.

Hating something wrong is a double negative so therefore it is not wrong. Even-so noone will ever agree that hating racism is right so that’s not much a point to make.

People tolerate intolerance every single day multiple times, but there is a difference between intolerance and stupidity and wearing something symbolizing the KKK in the 21st century is nothing shy of stupidity

I applaud your standing up against racism. Some of these comments are sickening. Unfortunately, standing up against the status quo (racism) oftens leaves you open to more negativity and discrimination. This has sparked an important discussion on how we (my co-workers) should be standing up against this. Thank you for being willing to do this and please know there are people across the state standing with you.

As a parent with 4 elementary aged children, I am so shocked! I grew up in the Bay Area as the caucasian minority, but skin color was a non-issue. I haven’t seen much racial tension in Utah, but reading these posts are very scary to me. Way to go, Larz! I’m sorry for your experiences here–the majority of Utahns, I believe, treat others with kindness and are service/community-oriented.

We have debated moving to Draper to attend Alta, but not impressed by the kids with such an entitlement problem who can’t seem to spell or respect others for who they are. I recall another recent story of a cheerleader there who was portrayed in a mean way for sticking to her standards of not competing on Sunday. What is going on over there when kids that are making good choices should be encouraged and praised, but are torn down by so much negativity?

As a retired administrator who spent some time at Alta High School, I am appalled that so many students at this high school could leave such crude, hateful, inhumane, and poorly written responses on this blog publicly concerning this incident. This is a sad commentary that each of you who have written these things, felt you could spew this ilk, let alone put it out for the world to see. I am sure you are a minority of the school population, but each of your parents should be required to see the garbage you have written and each of you held accountable for your ugly, intolerable behavior. So sad that you would cast such a poor light on your school, city and community. I am embarrassed for you, your parents, and all of us who live here, to think we have allowed you to grow up thinking you are free to verbally bully your classmates, and that they are in the wrong if they do something to correct it.

The comments by some of these students is absolutely shocking. There is obviously a serious problem at Alta High School that needs to be formally addressed. I grew up in the sixties and seventies in the aftermath of the civil rights movement. I thought we were making great strides forward with regards to stamping out racism and prejudice. However, based on some of these comments, it appears that there are those among the current generation of young people who have the ability to set this country back at least 50 years in this regard.

Now that the Salt Lake Tribune has posted a link to this blog, hopefully the parents of Alta High School students will get on here and read what their children are saying. This kids DO NOT represent Utah at large. We are NOT a racist state, and to prove it, we need to come down hard on these kids and nip this problem in the bud.

Wow, I am a former Alta student. This action is extremely disturbing to me. I do not have any tolerance whatsover for any form of racism. I was taught to love all people!!! I am grateful that my parents taught tolerance rather than intolerance. Parents of the kids that have posted uneducated comments should be ashamed. I would never have tolerated this action at my school assemblies nor tolerate such comments to be made by my children. I believe that the majority of the kids I grew up with at Alta 83-87′ would have supported you, Larz, completely!!!!! Rasicm is a total lack of education. Total Lack of any intelligence!!! If any one here who is angry at Larz for being appauled at this behavior and then seeing that nothing was done by the administration, so he took a stand…well, I feel very sorry for you. We live in a free country, but that does not mean to express hate. Whomever made the comment that we are all “racist” in some form or other is Wrong!!!! I have love for ALL!! no matter our circumstance, wealth, color, sex, race/ancestry, political views, age, religion, etc, etc, etc!!!! Expression of hatred, is not expressing freedom….it is supressing freedom. Expression of Love and Tolerance Never Takes away Freedoms like hatred does!!!!!

    Dear Genieve,

I find it humorous that you want to keep your blind lines “pure” you even go on to compare it to the blood line of Italians. It’s fine if you don’t believe in interracial relationships, you have that right. But get your facts straight so you can convey your message more intelligently.
One. Italians are not a “pure” race. The Moors changed that when they conquered Sicily. The Moors are Black. They changed the entire blood line forever.
Second, Genieve is a female name so I am assuming that you are female. If it weren’t for women like the sufferagetes, and feminist your opinion wouldn’t even matter today on this blog.
Third..bra burning never took place in Atlantic City. It’s a media myth. What did take place was women throwing away beauty regime objects such as false eyelashes to protest the Miss America Pageant. It had nothing to do with the desire to be as you put it “sluttier”. Quite the opposite. Those women no longer wanted females being seen as objects.

An insensitive act should not encourage more insensitivity. Lars, you have the right to be upset and state your opinion regardless of whether you’ve been in trouble before or not. Many terrible comments have been said about both parties. I don’t see the good in this. Let’s allow the offender to be punished appropriately and Lars to state his opinion. If the media responds in a big way, maybe it will send the message to these students that not everything can be covered up with the excuse of “he was just joking”

White people, from my experience, oppose and persecute blacks because they think it’s funny or are threatened by them. Ignorance fuels this poor lack of judgement. Over 20 years later i can recall the experience like it was yesterday.

Larz, I am appalled at the words and actions of the students at AHS…but am even more disturbed that the administration and teachers didn’t jerk that kid right out of the assembly, and suspend or expel him. There is no room for hate in this world, and it would appear that many here in Utah are the most ignorant and hateful I’ve seen. Please know that the classless and moronic vocal minority do not express the opinions of the intelligent and informed majority. Some may say that you are “making a mountain out of a molehill”, but it takes one BRAVE soul to bring about change for the good of all. I daresay that you are the Rosa Parks of Alta High, choosing fairness and right over acceptance and fear.

The majority of Alta students are stuck up snobs who walk around with silver spoons in their mouths. No one in their right mind would show up to work or any public place for that matter wearing a white hood unless they had intentions of projecting their hate and making it known. (There are no, just kiddings in the real world)Funny? Ha, no it just shows ignorance and your blatent disregard for your surroundings. Im not surprised one bit at how numb and insensitive these students were. Ever since President Obama started getting close to winning the Presidential race, I’ve noticed a lot more of my white friends expressing publicly their true feelings towards African Americans. It only goes to show the racism is still heavily present in today’s society. What disturbs me the most is that it is in Utah, where there is a strong influence of LDS faith.

I was born and raised in Miami, FL. Attended school from start to finish in one of the roughest parts. I am not black, but only had friends that where due to the school I attended and my neighborhood. I know what it feels like to be discriminated against as a minority. I also know students like the one who made the mistake of, thinking he could be funny by creating a “costume” hood and running around in a disrespectful and distasteful manner. I knew “kids” like these (fake) and have had friends who have been taunted by the real life KKK members in my neighborhood growing up. Burning crosses and hurtful words spoken to great families I knew! There where some bad black folks but there where more good hardworking families trying to make a life.
It truly is heartbreaking to hear about racial issues in a predominately white high school. I thought we had progressed as a society? Racial tensions are still strong in the south due to how we raise our children and our influences over them. If only the boy who acted in such a childish manner knew what it was like to see events, such as the one he poorly chose to recreate in real life? He may actually have some form of empathy towards a race who had to endure true hardships and pain to be where they are in society.
I think the boy in this incident made a bad choice in his actions and should be punished accordingly… Maybe not expulsion but taught a lesson he will always remember as he matures through life into adulthood.
Whatever actions are taken at this school to correct this issue will always be remembered and serve as a reminder to future students, staff, faculty, and state legislators. Utah will be in the spotlight for their decisions regarding this incident… lets not make ourselves out to be a fool. The country is watching us….

It is obvious by statements from students at Alta High that racism and ignorance is very much alive and that using “humor” as a shield for racism has transcended the real issue for these students. Bottom line, the kid that wore the hood should be expelled and be held accountable for his actions. It was obviously premeditated and to get a few laughs at the expense of being overtly racist was a poor choice that should have consequences. What exactly is this kids defense? He was trying to be funny? KKK & anything Nazi related is not appropriate in a high school setting. What we see here is victimizing the victim, similar to the horrific experiences rape victims endure when they call out their abusers. “It’s the victims fault right?” Nobody is calling out the student for his actions on this board, the statements made by those who choose to take the low road only validate the attention this is getting and reveal that racism is still a problem. Some of these comments are appauling and the lack of concern from the top from the administration all the way down to the students should prompt community action and awareness.

It has been enlightening to read the past 300+ posts and getting a feel from a small group of the human family on issues that everyone seems to feel are important. You feel it is important or you wouldn’t have taken the time to write. Even I feel the importance of this moment.

The comments are varied in opinion. Some are very passionate and dynamic and others are emotionally charged. All of these comments have come from within you because of an incident between two individuals that many of you and I have never met; Larz and Mac.

Some of you witnessed the incident, many didn’t, however, it is worthwhile to note that because of something you felt strong enough about, each of you stood and took a side. Some of you sided with Larz, some McKay. I would venture to guess that some of your lives have been touched and changed and never will be the same again.

It is not always easy to take a stand. Harder I imagine among peers or others. It has been expressed many times that this country was built on the framework and ideal of freedom of expression. I applaud all of you who posted for having the passion of expressing your views even with the thought of repercussion.

Was it right or wrong what happened in a high school gymnasium?

My point is that something innate, inside of you spoke to your mind and your heart to express your feelings the way you have. What is it that gave you the courage and strength to state your feelings. I imagine that it might well be the first time for some of you to take such a stand. It is truly important and what I would dare say is the key to who you are in finding out where that inner voice comes from? Is it the way you have been raised? Your parents? Peers?

Understanding who you are and knowing that innate voice is what I believe will be the key to your legacy.

Larz and Mac, I hope that one day you will be able to reconcile with one another.

    Larz,

Thank you for standing for something. Racism is still a problem regardless the color, religion or location. From what I have read and heard of this incident it was tasteless, inappropriate and clearly out of line.

The poor kid who was so ignorant as to put on a display wearing the hood and mocking in a racist manner has shamed his name and family as well as the Hawks. I think some officials at the school also did not handle the matter well by not taking clear and assertive action. I feel bad for this kid because of his stupid act, I really do. However, Larz, it’s also important to be careful. The people who have acted stupidly over the bad behavior have hurt themselves more than they have hurt you, I think it’s important to remember this.

In the end I hope that people learn from this, forgive one another and rebuild a better school and community.

Unfortunately, showing decency and respect are difficult for some.

    Thanks Larz.

Lars, I think it’s great you had the courage to stand out from the crowd and point out an obvious problem, one which the administrators should have immediately dealt with. Just remember that high school is only temporary, so the social repercussions you are experiencing will also be just as temporary. Nevermind your classmates’ ignorant comments and continue to stand up for what’s right. I find it curious, raised as a white Utahn, that the “majority” don’t seem to remember our roots — harassed by mobs without peace for years until our ancestors came here. I am not comparing it to what other ethnicities have had to suffer, but we should have learned from our history to be ashamed of doling out similar treatment to anybody. To those who think it’s blown out of proportion, sometimes that’s what it takes to get results. Hopefully realistic punishments will be made (not just a slap on the wrist) and the perpetrators will learn their lesson before they move on to adulthood in this society.

Regardless if this was wrong or not a “big deal” to some people, it is a big deal to someone and it is no one’s place to tell anyone how they should feel or act. We all come from backgrounds and we have all been raised in different situations this is america! He is entitled to his feelings regardless and so are you, but bottom line hurtful words are never appropriate! Yes this was a high school event and perhaps administration should have recognized any wrong doing but yet again we are human and make mistakes. I’m so sorry Lars that it still hits so close to home and hurts you so much to see someone in a white pillowcase. I believe, from what I have read, the boy was insensitive – but, did he really know that wearing a white pillowcase would hurt you? I’m sure it was never his intent to do that – at least not until you overreacted then the stupid hormone took over his good sense.
However, you are so wrong here. He made you feel bad, but what you have altimately done to him, is a crime. For you to cry racism and call him a supporter of the KKK when that is, of course, totally wrong, and 1000 times worse. You have hurt him so much he may never recover. He was stupid, you should accept his apology and give him his life back, and the lives of the administrators. Your father should be ashamed of himself. Instead of being a good example for you, he has taught you a very poor lesson – the lesson that pulls you from the human race and into the black race.
If you want to do the right thing, accept the young man’s apology – stop going for the jugular…he doesn’t deserve your hate.

  196. I’m white and grew up in Utah, but I lived on the south side of Chicago for six years before moving back here and it changed my view completely. Utah is way behind on racial issues in general, simply because this place is so homogeneous. I’m glad this incident is getting so much attention. We need some heightened awareness. I don’t care if this kid meant nothing by his actions, it shows complete ignorance and disrespect for black history and racial issues in general.

Anyone who thinks racism is history, or that everything between races is fine today, is ignorant. There is work to be done on all sides and one of the ways you can help is to study black history, put yourself in their shoes and their parents and grandparents shoes. Their experiences cross generations. A white pillowcase over the head with holes for eyes, even if it wasn’t meant to be a racial message, carries extreme emotional connotations for African-Americans. Grow some respect. Learn the history beyond your pathetic social-studies curriculum. Read “The Race Beat.” Disney can’t do the civil-rights movement justice.

It’s really sad because while this is happening between teenagers, there are educators out there (at other schools in Canyons School District) that create unsafe environments for their students. There are teachers that are saying hateful and racist things directly towards students in a classroom setting.

There are parents and educators who, too, continue this cycle of intolerance.

Racism is alive and well at alta high school that is for sure. If one examines the many ignorant comments that have been posted you can see this for your self. Alta high school must have a serious problem when it comes to racism. Even if the kid was doing this sort of action as a “joke” he must be punished and aware of what he is doing. He is an adult and their is consequences for his action joke or no joke. For those who are telling larz to “calm down” why should he? Does he not have the write to speak his mind and state his own opinion on his own blog. The only thing out of line is the actions that the student decided to make. I would also like to add that there needs to be a serious investigation against this “RAWHIDE” group. From sources this is either a real person, or a group. I’m putting this out there for anyone who cares to answer: Did the actions of the student in the hood qualify as hate speech? Do some of the heated and angry insulting posts here on the blog qualify as hate speech? What do you think?
To MB and Geneiveive: Chances are you guys are far from “pure blooded” With as much ethnic mixing that has taken place in US history even the blondest blue eyed babies could have Hispanic, Black, or Native American ancestors. Considering this you might want to reconsider the attitude you’ve taken on about being “pure”. With all that sort of talk you’re beginning to sound like a Harry Potter villain.
Even if the hood was meant as a joke I know you guys have been offended by “jokes” in the past, and you ought to know, being in highschool, how hurtful actions and words can be.
The adage “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me” is a baldfaced lie. Words and actions hurt the spirit and emotions…and those take far longer to heal than any bone or ligament.
I’m somewhat concerned at the writing prowess, or lack of it, that is being exemplified in the blog comments: to quote C.S. Lewis “What are they teaching children in schools these days?”

To all those who say the offender may not have realized his actions were offensive: you are part of the problem! This young man knew exactly what he was doing – he wasn’t born yesterday and I am sure, without knowing him, that he has had a government/history class or two by now and was aware of the atrocities committed by the KKK!

For all of you who say this wasn’t ‘really’ offensive, Lars should just get over it, Lars is making much ado about nothing, etc.: what if someone had worn “LDS temple clothing”? It’s white (the color the offender wore to show his spirit – is it appropriate? What about LDS baptismal clothing? I am sure many would have found either of these highly offensive! P.S. Yes, I am an active LDS member.

To the people who have posted that Lars should go back to where he came from: you exemplify racism so well and demonstrate that it definitely is alive in the Canyons School District!

Lars: hang in there. Remember, we need to stand up for what is right more than ever!!

Actually no. No one defends us Mormons so no one would have done anything about it. There’s a considerable amount of hatred, threats, etc.. and probably more than black people these days and the whole world just sits there and mocks us right along with everyone. So don’t even try to say it would be the same out come because it wouldn’t. Mackay did something stupid but it was out of ignorance. None of us understand what racism really is. The fact that he did it shows how un racist he. You really think he would have done if it meant something?? Dont be stupid.

Your stupid to think he wouldn’t have done it otherwise.

Uhh, Jessica, mormons defend mormons every day. Alta is filled with LDS students and faculty and trust me – I guarantee if somebody would have come out in temple clothing, students and faculty would have been in an uproar.

P.S. As stated previously, I believe the offender has had some history classes and because he plays on sports teams for Alta, I can safely assume he has passed those classes. Thus, ignorance is not an excuse – he knew better.

I am sorry this was your experience at Alta. We have been happy with Alta as a whole. I have a daughter who attends there and told me her perception of the incident. She did not think it was right to dress as KKK, but also thought it was just an ignorant “joke”. We moved here from the Chicago area, where it is MUCH more diverse, and we do hear and see things that are just thoughtlessly said, not just against others of different race, but also about others who are different in religion than the majority religion here. And while that has been our unfortunate experience as well, being a different religion, we do realize that not all people here do or say these things. We have met many good people here, who are not callous to those who are different than them. I hope you will meet many more of those than you do the other. I disagree with how this has been handled by the district, though. This is a great opportunity for learning- a teachable moment being wasted, if you will. Instead of suspending administration, why aren’t they asking those administration and the counselors at Alta to step up and host forums, getting the students to discuss things openly, giving all a chance to be a part of a solution. Perhaps the student who did this should be given the opportunity to apologize to the student body for being callous. From what my daughter has said, many students do not think this was done maliciously, just ignorantly. Just my thoughts.

Not very useful to start bragging about who can throw down better than the other. So now it sounds like you want your friend MacKay to start assaulting someone who is supporting a person for standing up against a racially hateful action?

Doing so would further solidify the media’s notions that students at Alta are racist. If they are willing to support the person who wore a KKK-inspired hood through violence then that shows some serious issues of hate and intolerance.

By the way, you may want to note that you just threatened someone and may not be taken lightly by others (same goes for the poster you replied to). You are not entirely anonymous as it is possible for authorities to track where you sent your message. Just thought you may want to consider that when you are posting messages on the Internet.

Its a huge compititon between the seniors and the jr. he wore the mask directing his attention to the seniors WEARING BLACK NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACK!! come on . i mean ya it passed a line but it could have been handled A LOT differently then putting this kid in soooo much of a mess.. and going to the administration and the news.. how desperate are you for attention.. if anything you could have gone to his house and been like hey ya know this is how i feel blabalabla and it would have never happened again.. now putting alta in the huge mess.. its not only involving you but i cant even go to the bathroom at school without being watched by a cop .. again the kid wasnt even looking at you. i was there! he was looking at the seniors because THEY WERE WEARING BLACK!!!! .. get it right.. why do you have to twist up the whole story? you look like a dumb ass to me for making up this whole thing, im not the only one who feels this way. alta was fine with out you.. and would be better with out you and your drama

How desperate for attention Mackay must obviously be … he – in leah’s words – “passed a line”. But hey, no worries! He knew better but since it was all in fun & games & all, then Larz should not be offended. Mackay didn’t realize that when Larz pulled his hood off & threw it down that was a signal that he was offending Larz. “Larz, you should have just put up with everything that Mackay did & then went over to his house one day & said it bothered you.”

“Mackay had every right to mock the great racist Hitler & be an idiot. But you had no right to be offended.”

I think everyone learned a big lesson from this especially the Principle, vice principle, and Mckay. As far as Larz, I think he is just soaking up all the glory he is getting for all the comments in his defense. Everyone knows it was a dumb joke, and shouldn’t be joked about but now other people are paying for it, like some of the administration. You have to remember that they still have families to provide for and I think it’s ridiculous reading the blog hearing all those who are strongly backing up Larz. How are we suppose to let these growing teenagers learn from their life mistakes if we don’t forgive and move on? I think there is a lot of harassment going towards Mckay and his family right now that none of you are taking in to account. We have already put our selves in Larz’s shoes, but now I think we all need to take a walk in Mcays shoes and let the situation pass.

Remember, if you don’t forgive others you receive the same forgiveness from God. were all human and make mistakes! But most of your mistakes get swept under the rug and forgotten about the next day, but when you get others involved in your personal life, it’s harder to get over the mistake you made.

We need to act like adults now and move on! It’s sad that it takes a 9/11 terrorist attack to humble America and support each other, but even then hate and crime are back in the mix when we get back in the groove of life again.

Larz I feel sorry for you. I’m sorry you felt like this joke was pointed towards you, but we all know it wasn’t and I’m afraid you know it your self. I don’t want to point fingers at anyone but I think you were in the wrong as well as Mckay was. I read blogs about you beating up and bulling kids your self, so how do you justify your actions?

There is a lot of hard feelings towards you from many people in your school now, and I don’t think they will be eliminated until you accept the apology given to you many times by Mckay.

I say Mckay should make a blog in his defense. Keep your head up bro!!

Ok, people, let’s all step back from the issue and examine the evidence and the facts, such as they are. I’ve read all the news stories and only half the posts here, and have concluded that not everyone actually knows everything about what actually happened. What I’m getting from all this chatter is the basic human conundrum that Perception Is Reality. Larz perceives the situation his way, while others see it their way. This is all like trying to nail down subatomic particles that change direction and trajectory depending upon the observer of the phenomenon. I respectfully suggest that we all withhold judgement until all the facts are in and all the crucial evidence is laid out on the legal table for everyone to examine dispassionately. I read comments here regarding rampant racism at Alta High. I also read reports of Larz’ liberal usage of the N-word, as a form of reverse racism, to distinguish himself as an oppressed minority. Many horrid attacks have been levelled at Larz for speaking his mind. And many equally horrid attacks have been aimed at Larz’ obvious enemies. None of this is constructive. There is a backstory here that, upon investigation, will all come out in the wash. Personally, on this blog board, I perceive racism from all ranges of the spectrum, and it makes me highly uncomfortable. There is too much emotionalism and heresay circling this issue. We need to employ the scientific method here and focus on bare-bones facts. This is why we have attorneys, investigative journalism, and jurisprudence. I strongly suspect that everyone involved with the alleged KKK hood incident is coloring reality to suit their own agendae. So, let’s be cool and remain calm. The truth is mighty and shall prevail.

What happened at school was shameful and should not be tolerated. The way that you have portrayed it by adding lies to the story is just as shameful though. You ought to be suspended for your behavior as well. Why not just tell it the way it happened? There was no need to embellish. It was bad, plain and simple. But it was not directed specifically at you, nor were there “hail Hitler” signs given. He NEVER got in your face. I understand why you were offended and I agree with that, but that is no reason to lie about what actually happened.

Thank you for having the courage to bring this up for notice and discussion. Too many people find it uncomfortable and refuse to say anything. Silence is a way of condoning an act like this: “Well, no one said it was wrong, so they must be okay with it”. It also reminds people that this isn’t a joke, and the “Gee, I was just kidding” doesn’t mean it’s okay either.

I am a junior at Alta High School. Mackay wore the hood targeting the color black which represented the seniors’ color at the spirit bowl, not the race. I understand how offensive this was but the truth is, Mackay was just being a dumb ass. He didn’t understand the magnitude of what he was doing, I’m not implying that he isn’t aware of what the KKK or Natzi party stand for. I believe he just didn’t think it through far enough to realize what it looked like from people who don’t know his humor or how they’d react. I think it’s really sad that for whatever reason Larz is milking this incident, Mackay apologized. EVERYONE understands that what Mackay did was wrong, especially him. It was pure ignorance. If the news would stop taking the words from Alta students out of context maybe people would know the truth, which is, Canyons School District does not have a racist problem, nor does Alta High School. At least not anymore then any other public school out there. Thanks to the media’s and individual incessant attempts at getting some unsatisfied pity, the perception of Alta and our school district have been distorted in a fallacious way. It is sad that people cannot handle this maturely. I am embarrassed of the way my school is now portrayed in all of its falsehood. I hope those responsible are happy for unnecessary tarnished reputation of our school.

Let’s see…. This happened at the “Spirit” bowl…he was wearing a white pillow case with holes cut out for eyes….Did anyone ever think he was just trying to be a “spirit”? EVERYONE is discriminated against in one way or another, religion, race, male-bashing, female bashing…etc. It happens and probably won’t ever stop, so we all need to be comfortable with who we are and as long as we are happy with ourselves, it doesn’t matter what others say. And yes, as a white Mormon girl living in another state, I have been the target of some pretty bad harassment. Been there, but it didn’t ruin my life.

Being a target of discrimination as a minority has different implications and affects than being a part of the majority and being discriminated against. I do apologize that you have had to deal with intolerance in that way; do realize, though, discrimination on the other side is completely different in nature and scope.

By the way, if the student was trying to be a “spirit” or “ghost” why couldn’t he have worn a sheet as a costume. Obviously this was not a well thought out action.

Among other things…. Hmmmm.

Those are all very deplorable actions. And I am very sad anyone feels that way about Mormons as well as you having to experience that. All I am saying being the target of racial discrimination is different from being one of religious discrimination (one not being better than the other). However, I do not condone either as both are forms of hate.
If I had your experiences I am quite sure they would have created more room for me to have sympathy for those who have been affected and feel ostracized in this situation at Alta High.

Since you’re a CERU, was this just a project for you to get the community talking???

The Commercialism in Education Research Unit (CERU) conducts research, disseminates information, and helps facilitate dialogue between the education community, policy makers, and the public at large about commercial activities in schools. It is the only national academic research unit dedicated to this topic. CERU is guided by the belief that mixing commercial activities with public education raises fundamental issues of public policy, curriculum content, the proper relationship of educators to the students entrusted to them, and the values that the schools embody.

As someone who has lived in Sandy all my life and is married to an Arab-American I can tell you that racism in Sandy is alive and well. I am sure that being black in a mostly (98%) community is no picnic, but try being a part of the culture your country is currently at war with. My wife has been told to go back to her home country (to which she replies Marin County California?) among other jewels of wisdom. I can tell you that the reason it is prevalent is becasue of the attitudes of the parents we have seen in this case. The mother of this child is trying to make it sound like it was no big deal. Parents, teach your kids what the right thing is. Remember that choose the right means to choose what is always right all of the time. Not just what you feel is important to you. FIX THIS PROBLEM, TEACH YOUR KIDS THAT RACISM IS WRONG.

Wow … I am the father of a son who is attending Alta and another son who graduated from Alta a couple of years ago. After reading the various news accounts, Larz’ descriptions of the event, the hundreds of comments on this blog, and having a discussion with my son who witnessed the entire event … I am honestly “embarrassed” to be a part of the Alta community. So many of you are attacking Larz and his father rather than acknowledging the absolute stupidity, foolishness and insensitivity through the event itself (fully independent of Larz’ comments). And for those of you who are Christian and/or LDS (which I am), you should be truly ashamed. I am so very tempted to transfer my son to another school so that he is not influenced by such false pride, immaturity and bigotry.

Larz, I have lived in Sandy over the past twenty years with five children who I thought would be earning their high school diploma at Alta. I have always been “proud” of the Hawk mascot, using it often with my kids as a symbol of a gracious and noble being that can see all things with great clarity and focus. Obviously, many many students at Alta have not acted as Hawks, but rather vultures who are weak and filthy scavengers, feeding in groups on the bodies and blood of others who have died long ago. I am SO sorry that you have faced what you have and give my sincerest apology for this absolutely unacceptable experience.

Referring to a song by Ronnie Dunn (of Brooks and Dunn)

Let’s say we’re sorry, before it’s too late
    Give forgiveness a chance
Turn the anger into water, let it slip through our hands.

We all bleed red, we all taste rain, all fall down, lose our way,
We all say words we regret, we all cry tears, we all bleed red.

If we’re fighting, we’re both losing
    We’re just wasting our time.

Because my scars, they are your scars, and your world is mine.

Sometimes we’re strong, sometimes we’re weak
Sometimes we’re hurt and it cuts deep
We live this life breath to breath
We’re all the same; we all bleed red.

Let’s say we’re sorry before it’s too late.

Larz and McKay, I hope you solve this, and love and understand each other better because of it. I hope you both forgive all the people who have said terrible things about each or you. I hope the Alta community can be strong and overcome this. You both are very young…but I believe this can make you both better people.

I disagree with racism in every form, although im sure everyone can be accused of it at one time or another. There are a lot of stupid people in every culture, but we all need to just get over this. Yes, Larz overreacted, no doubt about it. I go to Alta, and it is not a racist school, and it is ridiculous that one’s folly is now viewed as all of Alta. We all need to get over this, and let it go.

I couldn’t get past the first 2 comments. They do nothing but prove that racism is alive & cherished today.

It’s sad and that 2nd comment actually made me nauseated. But I did giggle to myself when I realized that they actually think they can control who their children sleep with …etc.

Pure bloodline?? There is no such thing. Anyone dumb enough to believe their bloodline is pure is not very intelligent.

Somehow they are blaming the victim for the aftermath caused by the immature & racist actions of another. Could someone explain to me what Hitler & the Nazi’s have to do with the “white class versus all the other class colors”??? That is the parent’s excuse .. that he was screaming “white power” because it is his class color. Ok .. so why was he mocking Hitler? Ohhhhh because white power & hitler kinda go hand in hand, don’t they? Seems that most racist skinheads that I see in PRISON usually have lots of Swastika’s tattooed all over.

This kid knows that he was playing with racism. He knows exactly what he was doing.

Racism is wrong. Long ago we hated the Indians … then the Germans/Irish .. the Russians … then the Jewish .. then the Japanese … then the Blacks .. then the Muslims …

But we honor the Indians now & are quick to claim American Indian Blood with pride — but we once murdered them just because & we disowned any ‘halfbreeds’ … Same with every other group of ‘people’ who is/was different than us. Just think it all started with Christians killing other Christians in the name of God!

After we finally realize that Muslims & Blacks are people just like us … and not all Muslims are terrorists … who are we gonna hate next?

Who are we gonna hate next?
